Would you fly or drive?

to OH from NY

we're going to OH for Christmas to visit my MIL (just kill me now!) and I was able to find a round trip non stop flight for $193 PP.

if we drove, it would cost around $100 round trip for gas + tolls, but it's 8 hours each way!!!! Chat Icon

Re: Would you fly or drive?

Personally I would fly. The way I look at things like that are "what is my time worth"....8 hours on the road may be less expensive, but getting on a flight and getting there a lot quicker, without a lot of the headache that comes with traffic, etc.....

A guy I work with has family in Ohio and they drive there all the time and he always comes back swearing they will fly next time - they have yet to do that! haha

DH wants to drive Chat Icon he won't even hear the flying option.

I guess I can't blame him b/c our flight got cancelled for Christmas 2 yrs ago due to an ice storm in OH. and he was SO upset.

Definitely fly! You're barely saving any money if you drive.

well, it's almost $300 less... so that is saving a lot. and at least if we drive, we would have our own car and wouldn't have to rely on others for 4 or 5 days.

I agree. Do you have a car you can use while there, or is this your means of transportation? You don't want to be stuck in the house all day!

ETA: Just read your other post--I would drive to have the car while you are there. If you rent one that's more $$$$.

we could use MIL's car, but then she would be stuck at home.

Re: Would you fly or drive?

I would fly. My time would be worth it. Also you kill two days driving after being so tired from the trip.

Also bad weather would ground you either way, flying or driving.

Oops! Sorry! I thought it was $100 one way! I think I would still fly, though. 8 hours is a long trip! But Ican understand your DH wanting to drive since the cancellation of one Christmas.

That's not true. Ohio is one tank of gas each way and its only a 6hr drive to Youngstown from LI...that is the first city in Ohio from I-80. Its a very fast drive.

we drove to OH back in May and on the way home, we made it back in just over 7 hrs, we boogied! lol

airports at Christmas time will be a nightmare anyway... between the time we leave the house till we actually board will probably be 3-4 hours, assuming no delays!

so I guess it's more practical to drive. oh well Chat Icon

For practicality purposes, I would drive. the airport's can be a nightmare around that time of year - a quick 2 hour flight could turn into 7 hours waiting. Besides it's always nice to have a car while vacationing.

This is my thought too. I flew last week and it was a nightmare getting through security - you have to be there at least 2 hours in advance for a domestic flight, and we were delayed taking off. So, combined with the travel time getting to the airport, a 2 hour flight turns into at least 5 hours.

I'd also consider driving, because you have the convenience of stopping and getting out of the car, and not being around all the other people on the plane. I get sick a lot after flying and I am convinced it is all the germs flying around in the cabin.

If you are going to be there that long...I saw drive. This way you have a get-away vehicle and you can use an excuse to leave early...ahh traffic.

Seriously, I would want to bring the car for the independence factor.
