Would you let a 12 year old have a laptop?
My stepdaughter has been begging for a laptop. She wants to use her own money to buy it.
She does not have a TV in her room or anything...and I just don't feel she is mature enough (but, what 12 year old is mature anyway  ) to have it. Between the cell phone issues and the attitude, I just don't feel it. I'm so tired of hearing "but everyone else has one" and I'm so tired of trying to explain why she can't have one. Because according to her, she will miraculously turn into an angel child upon receiving said laptop 
I'm so tired of being the evil step-mom who says no to everything  Oh...and DH tells her he will talk to me about it and gets her hopes up, so he makes me the bad guy

I honestly don't know. But my SILs and BIL have their own and they are 17, 15 and 12. But my one SIL has had a lot of issues with having a laptop (i.e. naked pictures )
Acutally, I change my answer, if it was my SIL, then no. Another girl, perhaps.

My 8 yo sister got a laptop for Christmas last year. She only uses it in the kitchen when my mom can supervise her

DS has had his own PC since he was about 3. I plan on getting them laptops probably when they are 8 or so.
HOWEVER..... I am going to have all sorts of parental control on the Internet connection, and also monitoring their hourly/daily use. I don't want them playing video games, or surfing for 8 hours a day.

My gut feeling is that I wouldn't. Why can't she do her school work or chat in the family room or wherever the family computer is? I think more supervision is better esp at that age. I'm scared of how mature or forced to be mature a girl that age is. I would want to be able to keep an eye on everything when it comes to Internet usage.

If it were my girls...Desktop in a family room where she couldn't shut herself in there with a door yes..Laptop NO way.

That's part of the reason. We have a family computer in the basement. DH spends most of his time down there and then he complains when she uses the computer because she makes a mess of the desk, or the computer doesn't work right when she's finished
