Would you put a claim into your homeowners insurance for this?

Our fridge icemaker / water connection somehow became dislodged from the fridge and we had a leak behind the fridge that dripped down to our basement.

Thankfully, our basement is unfinished, so nothing was damaged too badly down there, BUT we have hardwood floors in our kitchen that are only about 4 years old. They have swelled and are uneven in some spots now.

From what I've read online, they probably need to be removed and replaced.

Would you put a claim into homeowners insurance for this? Or do you think it would drastically increase my rates?

The area of the swelling is probably about 3ft by 9ft.

Thanks in advance!!!

ETA: I am also a little concerned about the possibility of mold because it appears that it was slowly leaking for awhile. Chat Icon

I had the same issue with water on hardwood floors. Depending upon the amount of damage and you deductible
I would find out the cost to repair before I called the insurance company.
We just installed new hardwood floors and had a major leak so the entire floor needed to be redone. We called the insurance company and had a check in 5 days.

Since you have a basement, I wouldn't worry about mold because the water had a place to escape. Just hook up a dehumidifier in the basement below where the leak was., and let it run for a week. Also try to keep the humidity in the house as low as possible. This will help the drying process. You can also call a mold remediation expert like puroclean for additional information

It all depends on how much it will be vs. your deductible. For example, if you deductible is $500, and the repairs come out to $700, they would only be responsible for $200, and at that point i see no need to involve ur insurance. where as if your deductible is $500, and the damage is $2,000... then i would def file a claim.

I probably wouldn't unless the damage was going to cost me a lot (5k or more). Considering your deductible, is probably 500-1500 and the damage is not that huge, its probably more cost effective to fix it yourself (or hire someone). I would assume the rates would increase which would also add to the cost.

I also agree.

Also agree with a PP who said to run a dehumidifier. I would also run one in the kitchen, too, unless you have the AC running. If you have CAC, keep it on a reasonable temperature even when you aren't home for a while. Mold can only grow in a certain humidity, so if you keep a dehumidifier or AC on, you shouldn't have mold problems. Of course, that's no guarantee that you'll be able to control the humidity level underneath the floors, but it's still a good idea to try.

Sorry this happened. Good luck!!
