if it says "recommend" handwashing? I just noticed that my new china set read this on the bottoms. There's no way I'm going to wash all those dishes when I use them. What do you think?

Nope. If there is any metal trim on it the dishwasher could remove or discolor it. Then your pretty dishes will look yucky.

Generally speaking, china is not meant to be used in the dishwasher. On top of the trim being ruined, it's a lot more fragile than your everyday dishes.

But it would say on the bottom of the dishes if they are dishwasher safe.

I wouldn't.

My cousin inherited my grandmother's china that had a fairly thick 24 karat gold rim around the edge. She put it in the dishwasher and the gold was washed away.

No way would I ever put mine in. I am very overprotective of it since it's one of the few items I have from my mom. Plus, it's over 40 years old (real delicate) so no way. I'll hand wash until the sun comes up.

I put my lenox in the dishwasher, on air dry. The heat from the drying is what damages it. My mom does too and our china is fine.

Great tip. I'm definitely going to try this. There's no sentiment to my china. I bought it myself on sale and it wasn't that much money. I haven't received my dishwasher yet, so I hope it has an air dry option. Chat Icon Chat Icon

I think all dishwashers have this option.

Re: Would you put China in the dishwasher..

I was told even the heat from the water will soften the metals, not so much wash them away. But by softening them they could smudge or get imprints when handled.

My mom never put the china in the dishwasher but I did put her crystal glasses in the dishwasher she freaked (no metal trim) the whole cycle but they came out sparkling like they were brand new.

A friend of mine had some of her china ruined in the dishwasher so I usually recommend hand washing

Re: Would you put China in the dishwasher..

I only hand wash mine.
but then again, my dishwasher is broken, so I have no choice.
My mom puts hers in the machine- but it has chipped from it.
