I bought a house that was turnkey. For me it seems like it's way too much money to renovate nowadays! unless you can do alot of the labor yourselves!

Re: Would you rather buy a home that is ready to move in, or needs work?

we bought a move in ready house....but we are still doing things to it!! i don't really think there is such a thing as fully move in ready unless you find a new construction!!!
we painted, did molding, floors, etc....the baths /kitchen were fine.....i keep saying that i can't believe i bought a move in ready house and i am still doing work to it!!! i think that no matter how move in ready it is, you will still change/upgrade things.....

but i do also have to say that i even totally considered a house that needs work but now i am glad that i didn't go that route b/c there are already too many decisions, too much time put in, and $ spent on my move in ready house!....i don't know if i could have did a complete gut as much as i would have loved to have had a house that was completely mine!! i don't think that i would have had the patience and ability to deal w/all of those decisions all at once!...it's hard when u work full time, etc.....make sure you can handle all that comes along w/ a fully gutted house, kwim?

Our home was technically 'move in ready' and yet we still ended up doing a lot (well, a lot for us - we're not handy). A total fixer upper would kill us.

I want a house that need absolutely NO WORK. After the extension and re-doing everything in this house it's something that I NEVER want to do again.

All I want in the next house is some walls that need some fresh paint and an updated kitchen and I'll be a happy camper Chat Icon

We bought a house that was move in ready, but we had changes to it to make it ours. took down a few walls, added moulding, new floors, etc. But we had a lot of family help so it made it that much easier.

When we were looking for our first house, we were looking for something that needed minimal work. We didn't have the cash or the know-how to start changing the layout and gutting rooms. We've done one major project, and are updating things slowly. But we never would've bought this place if it wasn't live-in ready.

I agree. We bought one that was completely live-in ready, but could use some updating. Then we can do the projects over years, and make the bathrooms, etc., exactly how we want them.

it was our goal to buy a total fixer & that's what we did. Our house was gutted from water damage when we bought it. We redid everything ourselves. 4 years later still doing stuffChat Icon

Re: Would you rather buy a home that is ready to move in, or needs work?

We aren't handy, and I'm glad our house needed minimal work. Just putting up curtain rods and closet systems we more than enough of a PITA. We painted one room... horrible experience. Plus we can't afford to do any major changes!

But... this was a flip house Chat Icon so nobody actually lived here, so maybe that's why it has never felt like anyone else's home.

ready to move in..at least thats what we did..we are not at all good at home improvement...
we actually looked at a house that needed a lot of work (it had potential, but really needed improvement). In the end I think it would have just costed us more money. Plus the extra money went to decor and furnishing our house...I feel we spent our money better that way

Re: Would you rather buy a home that is ready to move in, or needs work?

it would depend on the price. if there was an a house that needed a lot of work, but was cheap, i would probably do it.... that said though, i have four carpenters in my family, 2 that have built houses of their own, that would do the work for house for a minimal cost.

if it was a complete money pit, than no, i would go with a house that doesn't need work.

we ended up buying a house that we were able to literally move right in...they even painted and polished the wood floors for us...however, the house needs updating and so there will be some work for us in the future, but nothing that we can't live with for now.
