would you shave a Maine Coon?
I have a Maine Coon and his hair is getting EVERYWHERE... Plus, when the weather gets warm I can't help but feel bad for him...
I know my sister shaves her Himalayans in the summertime... (yes- she ACTUALLY calls *it* that
Is it uncomfortable or better for a hairy cat to be shaved in the summer?

I don't know if it's uncomfortable or not for the cat, but i would totally shave the cat. Not bald or anything but i would go pretty short

Re: would you shave a Maine Coon?
I had a Maine Coon growing up and we never shaved her... she just laid around in cool shadey spots in the house or yard (she was an indoor/outdoor cat).
Call a groomer and ask them what they think... or even call your vet.

Re: would you shave a Maine Coon?
My sister gets her Maine coon shaved at least twice a year. the cat looks funny but she is actually happier when she has less fur.

My BFF growing up had a Maine Coon and would have him shaved in the summer. He looked adorable! I think they did a lion cut on him...

Re: would you shave a Maine Coon?
I also have a Maine Coon and have been dying to get her shaved. Does anyone know a groomer that comes to the house? Or a reputable groomer that will do a cat in the Bayside/Queens area?
Sorry to hijack the post!
TIA.

Re: would you shave a Maine Coon?
i'm pretty sure cats are like dogs in the sense that they don't sweat so having hair in the summertime really doesn't matter. i think alot of people don't know that, that's why they shave their dogs down to the bare minimum in the summertime but you can actually keep them pretty long as long as you maintain the hair it's perfectly fine.

YES- Happy pet tails on Bell
they are amazing
I am taking my cat back there from Long Island now that I moved- they do the best Lion Cut ever
and my cat likes it there- it's calm and spa like
not cheap- about $80 - but after what a groomer in wantagh did to him - it's worth it to go back there
I highly recommend

Thank you so much!!! I know where that place is. I had my cat shaved last summer at North Shore Veterinary on Northern in Bayside, and besides the fact that they tranquilized her, they broke her eardrum!!!! She ended up getting such a bad infection she had to have an operation on her ear. It was horrible and I have been terrified of getting her groomed since. I'm going to check out Happy Pet Tails...maybe they'll even let me stay while she's being shaved so she is calmer.

Re: would you shave a Maine Coon?
my cat loves it there
he is very good- but when I took him to the other place - that basically just shaved him and tortured him - he ran away when I got there- he NEVER misbehaved at happy pet tails
they are so good with the animals there
I will be taking him back there when his fur grows in a little more - and I will just go to the movies or shop and wait for him
I would never take him anywhere else
here is a pic of there work

I know the feeling
I have 2 long haired cats
and my new apartment has navy and green carpet
I never had carpet before- so my vac is for hardwood floors
I seriously "waxed" the green rug yesterday with packing tape b/c I couldn't get it all up with the vac
so gross

Re: would you shave a Maine Coon?
I have an 8 year old Maine Coon who I have had for 5 years. I have never shaved him. The heat doesn't seem to bother him and even though he is an indoor cat, he loves going outside in warm weather.
Here are some pics of my Mr. Darcy Yes, the last one is of him on the roof. He loves to climb... Image Attachment(s):

I'm awful... this is the ONLY picture I have online of mine:

considering "Hamburger" (yes, that is his name) is the size of a DOG now, this picture is pretty old...
My cat is HUGE...

Hamburger is gorgeous!
My guy is pretty large too - he's about 15.5 lbs. My other cat is a regular domestic and he weighs 15lbs and all the weight is in his head

Re: would you shave a Maine Coon?
ok- looking at this cute pics of maine coons- really makes me think my Maggie is at least half Maine coon
this is her as a kitten- she is so fury now and has the SAME spots of white as Mr.Darcy - someone at the vet mentioned this to me when she was a kitten- but the vet said no - the guy who said it had a maine coon himself

Re: would you shave a Maine Coon?
To the O.P. sorry I can't answer since I don't have an M.C. cat, but I want one some day. If he was hot, I probably would shave him. Everyone has such beautiful cats. I love Mr. Darcy.
