Would you/wouldn't you? UPDATED

Everyone knows how completely miserable I am at my job. It is not getting better and I am having horrendous anxiety attacks typically 3-4 times a week now (losing sleep, hair falling out, heart palpultations, etc.).

A position has come my way that I would be well suited for outside of my current company. It's a "new" position (migrated from the loss of two employees; one moved, another started another career) but it's with a growing company (they are actually a client of ours and I uncovered the position via Indeed.com. More money, better working conditions, etc. I'm just so afraid to make a move in this economy. I put my resume out there to feel things out but I really didn't think I would hear back that fast. I'm just so on the fence; on the one hand I'm in misery 3 out of five days a week but on the other I have so much vacation time, etc. which will definitely come in handy due to the wedding, etc. Nothing has been offered but I have an interview tomorrow. What do I do????

Well, I was offered the position but for about $5,000 less than what I'm making now. Needless to say, I'm turning the position down. It's not like I'm desperate for a job/don't currently have one. I need to make at least what I'm making now and I feel like at this point in my career, with my experience, I'm worth more (not less). I have my little girl to care for/think of. I'm sooo-soooo bummed!!Chat Icon

Go to the interview!!! Sometimes going to an interview can show you how great (or not) a company/position is. Things happen for a reason, I wouldnt NOT go!!! Good Luck and Keep us posted I KNOW how awful it is to be at a cra*py job!!!

Re: Would you/wouldn't you?

Definitely go to the interview and see what happens. The state of the economy is enough to make anyone nervous, but you said yourself the new company is growing, and if they were in trouble, they wouldn't be trying to hire new staff in the first place. Don't burn any bridges at the current job just in case, but you shouldn't not seek a new job just because of the economy. Your health (physical and mental) is important and if your current job is that stressful, it would be silly not to keep yourself open to finding something else.

Oh, and if you're at the point that they want to hire you, you should mention your wedding plans and that you would need that week off or whatever. DH did that when he changed jobs a few months before our wedding, so they hired him with the understanding that he had preexisting major life plans that would require that time off shortly afterwards.

Go to the interview, feel it out, and see what happens. No need to make any decisions before you even interview.

Good luck! Chat Icon

If work was affecting me in the way that it is you, i would be out of there so fast... i just dont think the security is worth it enough to go through such misery.

I hear you about the time off though! Im contemplating a move in a year-ish, but 7 weeks vaca is kind of hard to walk away from! Go on the interview. You already learned your lesson of where settling gets you. Chat Icon

Definitely go on the interview, nothing to lose. When they offer it - just consider the whole package. Regardless of the economy, if its a valid job, its a job. It doesn't pay to be miserable on a consistent basis if you don't have to be. Good luck!

Sharon you have been miserable so long....I say what do you have to lose. They would not be posting for it if they didn't have the budget for it. I say at least go for an interview Chat Icon

Re: Would you/wouldn't you?

Thank you to everyone who said go...I did and it was AWESOME!! A total dream job!! They kept talking and I was like "uh-huh" (kind of like Christina Applegate in Don't Tell Mom The Babysitters Dead when she got the job at GAW). Everything was going great when in walks the CFO (who I had run into in a prior life) who LOVED working with me back then. He has some pull in terms of the hiring. They already started calling my references...please keep your fingers crossed. I'm ready to scream from the rooptops!!

Is there room for negotiation at all? Can you go back to them and tell them what you need?

I did and they pretty much told me there is no negotiation because I don't have a ton of HR experience. Still, I feel like I'm worth alot more and deserve better. I guess it wasn't meant to beChat Icon

Yup, it totally blows. I had a long talk with John and realized I'm not taking advantage of all the opportunities within my own organization (that I really should be). Tuition reimbursement, in house gym, etc. I need to get my act together, stop focusing on the negative and use this place for all it's worth!

OK...so when I read this post I was like GREAT!!!! That totally stinks but I also think if you are having anxiety attacks, you need to still look.
So, I did a little investigating and there is a position for HR manager here at my place. I wouldnt have mentioned it bc I thought you were in another state but from your FM's looks like you are closer then I thought. If you are interested let me know.
ALso, took your fm...that would be GREAT!

So they came back at me with a few hundred less than what I'm making now...I'm still not really feeling it, but based on the anxiety, etc. it would be a HUGE change of pace, eventual advancement in career. I just don't know what to do...Chat Icon

I wish I had advice for you but I thought I would throw u some Chat Icon . It's so hard to be at a job that you bring home and loose sleep over. Honestly though if you are still not feeling the new offer even though it's only a few hundred less as opposed to thousand i would still go with your gut.

I think I would take it. Is it less than $1000/year less than what you make now?

That is at most $38 a paycheck (if you get paid every 2 weeks), before taxes, if I did that right.

Re: Would you/wouldn't you? UPDATED

An annual salary decrease of a few hundred dollars broken out over the course of 52 weeks sould be minimal. If this new opportunity is going to relieve the anxiety and stress that is obviously affecting your health (sleep loss / hair loss / etc ...) I would definitely make the move to a better you - physically, mentally and career-wise.
If you really cannot afford the pay cut, then I would turn it down but look for a new opportunity asap. This job you have dos not sound healthy.

Good Luck

I don't think I would have taken it for thousands less, but for hundreds less, I think I would. Especially considering how miserable you are, I think I would take it. No one can tell you what to do, but your overall happiness and health is worth much more than a few hundred dollars a year, which you probably will not even feel in your paycheck. And making a move that takes your happiness and health into consideration IS putting your daughter first. You can also see if they'll negotiate some more considering you had other perks like tuition reimbursement and an in house gym they may not have been aware of. Maybe get them to agree to a salary review in 3 -6 months. Good luck with whatever you decide!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Oh Sharon, what a tough call.

I'd take the new job. The reduction in stress alone would be worth it to me. Honestly, at your current stress level, would you be able to add going to school at night too? It's a nice perk, but nothing is more important than being healthy. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

For a few hundred less than what I'm making now - I'd take the job.

My mental health is worth more than a few hundred anyway so I'd look at it as a lateral move on paper.

If you think you'd be much, much happier - make the move. Especially if there is room for growth which it sounds like there is!

ITA! Happiness is much more important than money, and if the differntial isnt that big I am sure you can make tiny adjustments in your spending to fix the curve. Is there any other monetary benefits? Maybe you will be saving on commuting? health insurance? lunch?

See that was the problem. I would be giving up a ton of perks (as of next year I'll have six weeks vacation, the ability to work from home, etc.). They still wouldn't budge with their offer and kept offering me crumb increments. It wasn't worth it to me and the process was making me feel jipped; like THEY didn't think I was worth it. I kind of looked at the overall situation and realized that right now is probably not the best time to look for a job. Granted, the job SUCKS but I do have flexibility to leave when Amber is sick, etc. Something I would not have at the other place. I think I need to get an emotional lobotomy so I don't care what happens here or rethink my emotions and start taking what I can from here and using it to my advantage. Between the wedding, a potential surgical procedure on my arm, the possibility of my Dad having his legs amputated, etc. it's no wonder I'm completely stressed out..
