WR: Did anyone *not* open their gifts at their bridal shower?
My sister is pretty adamant about not opening her gifts at her upcoming shower. She's not big on "shower games"... incidentally, can anyone suggest a non-cheesy game?(forgive the reference, I had cheesy games at mine ).
Her shower is 4 hours long - it's a Bridal Tea with all of the "appropriate" trimmings. We hoped the gift opening would buy us an hour+. Any suggestions on what to do to entertain?

exactly. they all want to see you open THEIR gift.
she's bent on doing that, huh? Since the gift opening is most of the party...yeah, there needs to be lots of games. I'm not sure! Sorry..no help!

Wow, we couldn't do that in my family. The older aunts would start a riot I think.

Re: WR: Did anyone *not* open their gifts at their bridal shower?
I would try to convince her to open the gifts if she doesn't want any games. So many people look forward to this stuff at a shower that I think they will be disappointed if neither thing happens.
I didn't have a shower, b/c I am just not a fan. If someone threw me one anyway, I definitely would have preferred to open gifts over having the games.

Thanks ladies. I feel the same. We told her we'd forgo the bridal chair and customary bow hat , but so far, she's not budging. Image Attachment(s):

I recently went to a "viewing shower" where all of the gifts were wrapped in clear plastic.

You can incorporate the gifts into the games:
1. bridal shower bingo 2. have a timer going for every 5 mins and when it goes off if the bride is opening your gift you get a prize

Re: WR: Did anyone *not* open their gifts at their bridal shower?
We did a guess who game at my friend's shower. There were youner and older ladies there so it helped to break the ice. We wrote celebrity names on Avery labels and stuick them on peoples backs. Then they had to walk around and ask "who am I" you can only give certain hints, etc...
I think there is going to be a mutiny if she does not want to open gifts!

I honestly don't blame her. I hated opening gifts at mine, mostly because I don't love being the center of attention. I also hated the bow hat lol. But I guess some people do look forward to seeing the bride do those traditional things.

this is how i was, i wanted a lunch and not a typical shower. there was no big poofy chair and no games. a good portion of the time was spent opening the gifts, i'd say an hour and half. so she has to be a bit more flexible or else you'll have guests getting restless and wanting to leave early.
if i didnt open my gifts, DH's family would've had a fit. they're very big on announcing which gift is theres.

I think if she doesn't want to open gifts she should just send an inviatation requested gifts be delivered to her home :)JK
The idea of the shower is you get showered with gifts for your new life with DH. I know I would be highly disappointed if I went to a shower and the presents weren't opened.
I would leave out the games if she doesn't want them and you can nix the bow hat

Re: WR: Did anyone *not* open their gifts at their bridal shower?
I DID NOT open my gifts, but I did have the bridal party open them and they handed them to me. I understand I didn't want to open them either, but I did compromise. As far as games I too didn't want any but they ended up numbering all the place cards. They had a bag full of numbers and after a couple of gifts they picked a number than the person won a gift. They did this 7 or 8 times people loved it.

i think you should strongly encourage her to open gifts
i don't understand how a bride-to-be can say she doesn't "feel like" opening them. well guess what - half of your guests don't feel like being there either, but they've come and they've brought gifts, and the right thing to do is open them

I agree 100%.
I also found it to be rude when the bridal party opens the gift and the bride never sees the wrapping. I know so many of my aunts and my grandmother love to wrap the gift nicely with fresh flowers etc.. and when the bride doesn't see that and the bridesmaids just rip it apart - I think that would offend them.
People have gone out of their way to spend money on you, wrap it nicely for you and be there on your day. The least you can do is open them and acknowledge them.

Re: WR: Did anyone *not* open their gifts at their bridal shower?
I really don't care for the gift opening part of the shower either, so I understand where your sister is coming from.
What I suggest, is maybe doing a gift lotterty. Label each gift when the guests arrive with a #'s (1 through whatever). Then have your sister open only ten or so of the gifts by picking a number out of a hat to determine who's gift get's opened. At least that cuts down on the gift opening time.
ETA: I love well-wrapped presents. I totally appreciate it. For me, it's all the more reason to open them at home so I can deconstruct it carefully and really enjoy it, rather than be rushed through opening all of the gifts and just trashing the wrapping paper (yes, I'm neurotic, I know).

Re: WR: Did anyone *not* open their gifts at their bridal shower?
Thanks again all. I just e-mailed my sis (the MOH) and told her the B2B has to open them.
We're getting a suite for an intimate family "after party" at the location of the shower, and we can give her any immediate family gifts at that time so there won't be as many gifts to open at the shower.
The B2B is hardly shy, she loves attention (she's never seen a camera she didn't like ), she's just, er untraditional.

I would be dissapointed if I didn't see the bride open the gift. It's a shower that's what you are supposed to do!

Re: WR: Did anyone *not* open their gifts at their bridal shower?
My mom & sister created a bridal booklet for my shower. If you would like to see, let me know. Why not have people wrap their gifts in clear wrapping so that everyone can see them but she is not actually opening them.
