Re: WWYD? Asking a stranger to watch your child for a minute?
i wouldnt do it... (except as the other poster said- if your on an airplane which is sealed off and in the air)
glad you said that to the mom- its too bad if the stoller is incovenient for her to bring into the restaurant. she had a baby, and the baby's safety should come first over the inconvenience of lugging her expensive stroller in a store.

Re: WWYD? Asking a stranger to watch your child for a minute?
I would never do that! I also would have NOT watched the woman's child. I would not want to be responsible for a strangers child no matter how short a period of time they asked me to watch them.

Re: WWYD? Asking a stranger to watch your child for a minute?
Absolutely not. I also am one of those crazy people who thinks about how I could get blamed if god-forbid something happened to the kid in that situation!

not a chance. And knowing myself, I would have asked when she asked me if she was out of her mind.

I would have watched the kid for a minute.
I have asked a nurse in a doctor's office (complete stranger) to hold my baby for a minute while I went in for an xray. I had the baby with me & wasn't expecting to be sent in for one.

i dont think what you said was wrong - maybe it will make her second guess the next time she wants to leave her baby with a stranger

Re: WWYD? Asking a stranger to watch your child for a minute?
I personally would not do it- but I havent been in a situation where I would need to look around and hope to be right with my instinct if I needed the help; but its nice to see some good in this world and how she trusted you with something so dear to her.

Re: WWYD? Asking a stranger to watch your child for a minute?
Well last week at the St. Patrick's Day parade in HB, I asked someone I knew from a long time ago to watch Gavin and my friend's daughter for a minute while I ran to find out where my friend's son was.
He was walking by with his son and he said hi and I said, "I know you, can you just watch Gavin and Ava for 1 minute, I need to find Griffin." We were in an open field, so they were in my eyesight. Griffin was with his Dad and my DH. I ran right back and then we chatted for a while and catched up, I haven't seen him in about 10 years.

I so agree with this. You don't know if they are going to accuse you of something. I wouldn't want to be responsible!

Re: WWYD? Asking a stranger to watch your child for a minute?
Bizarre...No way!! and 2 minutes wth a total stranger, no matter how safe the person looked.... Is she crazy? While I'd guess that 98% of the people are safe, the other 2% is not enough to take a chance.
And I'd tell someone I wasn't comfortable watching their child either. Someone could grab the baby, a dog could knock the stroller over or *insert anoy of a number of bad things of varying degrees here* You were put on the spot so I def could see how you'd be too shocked to even think of why it's a bad idea (IMO) to even say yes. I'm glad you called her out. Maybe she'll think of what a bad idea it is to do that in the future.

I wouldn't do it, why couldn't she call her sister on her cell phone?
I don't know that I would have said anything to her tho..
I know. I felt bad about it afterwards but it was one of those things that just slipped out of my mouth. It totally wasn't my intention to call her out. I think I was just so shocked.
I still feel bad about it now bc of how I probably made her feel. I would have slipped saying something too - and no - I would never let a stranger watch my baby!!!!

Re: WWYD? Asking a stranger to watch your child for a minute?
People just dont think!! At my job people come in for medical tests and bring their babies.. the baby cannot go into the exam room during test. They ask other patients they dont know to watch them!!! Im always totally shocked by this. I have to convince them to allow a coworker of mine watch them oppose to random patient.. at least this way I know exactly who it is watchign their in case something was to occur. I just dont get people.

Re: WWYD? Asking a stranger to watch your child for a minute?
absolutely not.... It's good you called her out... it made her think. She likely will never do that again. Better she feel flustered now, than regretful for the rest of her life!
this reminds me of a town outside of madrid that I visited.... I was walking along a crowded street and saw a stroller just sitting by a shop window with no one near by it
I went into the shop and mentioned that a baby was alone outside... the clerk told me that 'all moms do that'

I would have been shocked too. I probably would have said something similar also. Dont feel bad, maybe it will make her think twice before ever doing that again. All it takes is 1 second for someone to walk away with a child and screaming from inside a resturant isn't going to stop it.
exactly.

whatever-- good you called her out on it. you called attention to something stupid on her part, so she won't make the mistake again with the wrong person.

I would never. Why couldn't she take the baby inside? A lot could happen in 2 mins!
I agree ~ why did she just not take her child inside with her?

I would never. Even for 2 seconds.
I think what you said made her aware of what she did. She may think twice next time!

Re: WWYD? Asking a stranger to watch your child for a minute?
I would have watched the baby for her.. at least I would know the kid was left with someone 'trustworthy' - even if she didn't know it.
I probably wouldn't have said anything to her though. I like to *think* I would have told her that she ought to be more careful.. but my tongue would have stayed still in my mouth. And I would have thanked God that she chose me instead of some crazy person - I would have reveled in being a guardian angel if only for that moment.
ETA: I would not ask a stranger to watch my kid. I might have asked her to keep an eye on the stroller while I pulled my kid out and took him/her with me into the store.

Re: WWYD? Asking a stranger to watch your child for a minute?
I don't even ask strangers to watch my bag for 2 minutes, forget about asking someone to watch my son!
I probably would have said yes, though, for 2 reasons. First, I probably would have been caught off guard and just agreed. Second, I would have been afraid if I said no, she would ask someone else who IS a weirdo to watch the child. At least I know I am safe.
