WWYD if cleaning lady broke something..

Our cleaning lady broke a frame (it fell when she was cleaning) and it shattered.

She left a note telling me what happend and said that she'd be by the next day with a replacement as she saw an identical one. She also said that if I wanted, I could just take the money I paid for the frame from what we pay her and just give her the balance. She left the envelope we leave her untouched and also never called or came by with a replacement frame.

Should I just take the $ and leave her the balance, or would you take a replacement. It was a cheap $20 from from Kohl's, not a pricey one or anything like that.

If she has been cleaning for you for a while, I would not deduct the money from her. Mistakes happen and I am sure she feels horrible.

ITA. I would not deduct any $ from her if I were in that situation for that or require her to buy me a replacement. Accidents happen.

People break things. I wouldn't care, nor would I take money from her.

I wouldn't take anything from her. It could have easily have happened while you cleaned too.

As the PP said, mistakes happen.

I would tell her that I truly appreciated her letting me know & then tell her that there is no need to deduct money or replace the frame.

I woudn't say "it's ok, I'll take care of it" becaues it's not ok that she did it. The fact that she told you is great. I know many, many cleaning ladies/services that don't tell you anything.

ITA, especially since she was so up-front about it. If she tried to hide it somehow, and you just happened to find out, then I might charge her, but it was an accident, and she told you about it immediately, and was willing to make amends. I would let it go.... Chat Icon

Believe me, as far as I'm concerned, it happened, it was an accident and it's over. But DH...that's another story.

I have her envelope with me and will personally drop it off after work. She's been with us for over a year now and is the nicest person ever. I wouldn't have charged her for anything, but like I said, I told dh "I'll post the queston on LIF and you WILL SEE that I'm in the majority on this"

Can't wait to print this for him.

I agree...thats why its called an accident. She didn't break the frame on purpose.

If it was really expensive, maybe I would accept a replacement.

It was an accident, it happens. I agree with the PP who say they would NOT deduct money from her pay.

Re: WWYD if cleaning lady broke something..

This has happened to me but I always look at it as if she didnt break something I would if i was cleaning the house myself.. I love my cleaning girl so much and I could never charge her for breaking something.. But I have to say my DH would be acting the same way as yours.. So when something breaks (like the Beehtovan statue that I glued back together horribley and he saw it Chat Icon ) I just said I did it.. Chat Icon

I would not take any money or a replacement from her. She sounds like a good and honest person. My mom's cleaning lady has broken so many things and doesn't even tell my mom, let alone offer to replace it.

See that would pizz me off. She's great and like I said, I won't be deducting or asking her to replace anything.

I would not take money or ask for replacement(even if she has not been cleaning for you for a long time). especially if it's not something expensive . I would tell her not to worry about it and forget about it. Accidents happen.
and it sounds like she is a very honest person .

I completely agree. In this instance, I wouldn't take any money from her. Accidents happen. She was honest about it and you say it was a cheap, $20 frame. I'd thank her for her honesty and give her the usual amount of pay.

Since it was not expensive or important in any other way, and since she did the right thing and offered to pay for it or replace it, I would tell her not to worry about it. It was just an accident and I'm sure she will appreciate you being understanding.
