Re: wwyd? If someone you knew well borrowed $800 from you 6-8 years ago
If a friend stiffed me out of $800 after being asked to repay it. I doubt I would still consider them a friend. At least not a close enough friend to RSVP yes to their wedding.

When I give money to someone I don't look at it as a loan, I look at it as a gift. I hope to get it back but if I don't well than I don't give them any more money and lesson learned.
I would still give a wedding gift and the amount I give would not change because they still owe me money.

I'd consider them apples and oranges. What this person owed me has nothing to do with the wedding gift I give them.
However, I would have flat out said long before too much time had passed that I want my money back.
If they couldn't give all the money back up front we'd work out a payment schedule.
Oh and yes I do think some men and women will react differently to this situation.
ETA: I think more women would pitch a bytch in the card vs. men who would more likely just drop it and move on.
i'd agree with that, but as a guy, i wouldn't just drop it and move on, not for that kind of money.
I sort of agree with the apples and oranges deal. Maybe I would give a gift, but it would most certainly be less. As for what his spouse would think, if I got stiffed $800 and repeatedly asked for it back, I could care less what she thinks. Might as well know now that her DH welches on his debts.

In my head, the only way this is even a possible scenario is if we're still friends because they truly couldn't afford to repay me, and someone else is funding their wedding. In that case, I would give them the same gift as I would give anyone else.
If they just "forgot" to repay me and it had been years and I hadn't asked for the money, then I wouldn't bring it up for the first time in their wedding card, but I probably wouldn't be as generous towards them either.

I dont lend money to people expecting it back. I will remember though...for the next time they ask me...I will not lend them a dime. Its like a credit report with me.
Maybe the person forgot...I would bring it up....but still give the normal gift if you go to the wedding.

Re: wwyd? If someone you knew well borrowed $800 from you 6-8 years ago
hard to put myself in a guys' shoes... but i would probably go to the wedding and use Don's suggestion to give them a card saying that the $800 was their wedding gift.
think about it: if you don't go to the wedding, you're not going to see the $$ anyway
but if you DO go, they have to pay for 2 plates (assuming this guy is bringing a date) PLUS they don't get an actual wedding gift, so that might total close to $800.
might be petty, but hey - i'm trying to think like a guy here

I don't care if the wedding is at Oheka Castle, I am not giving a $800 gift. Therefore I would ask for my money back again. Still go to the wedding, not giving a gift. After they come back from their honeymoon I would ask again and again until I got the money.
I might also be inclined to bring my whole family to the wedding since the bum owes $800 for so long. I would never do that, but it sure sounds good to me now.

I would go to the wedding and put something in the card saying that the money I lent was their wedding gift. I would want the spoce to know what kind of person they are marrying and then let them deal with it.

If the guy has been reminded time and time again to pay up, then I'd have to go with writing "debt settled" in the card.
The guy should really settled his debts prior to inviting his creditor to the wedding and expecting him to give him a gift/cash.

I'm going with Other. If someone borrowed that much and didn't pay me back, I would not be going to their wedding.

Re: wwyd? If someone you knew well borrowed $800 from you 6-8 years ago
i wouldnt write in in the card... just give them a card. no gift...
their gift is the money given years ago that they used and you lost interest ontop of the principal... no need to give them extra money... consider the reception partial reimbursement cause you wont see the rest of it
