WWYD: Italy question....
While on vacation, we met a lot of people who have been to Italy. A few couples recommended to go and stay in only one or two areas - like one said to stay in Tuscany b/c it's so beautiful,etc..
but for a first timer, don't you think it's better to tour around to a lot of places to see a lot before concentrating on one little town?
Some say you get more of a "feel" by staying and eating in a little town that is not too touristy.

Re: WWYD: Italy question....
I just did the tour of Italy thing on a cruise. I liked seeing many places at once but would have enjoyed more time in some...like for example Tuscany!! It was beautiful!! You cannot go wrong either way my dear!

Re: WWYD: Italy question....
my dh and i did a tour of italy this summer. it had its good and bad points. the nice part about it was getting to see soooo many cities in a short time. the bad points...getting up at 6 am every morning, spending many hours on a bus, eating quite a few lunches at the "autogrill" (rest area), not having much time to explore on your own.
i have to say that our trip was a wonderful once in a lifetime experience but at the same time i don't think i'd do a tour again. i think i'd pick a few main cities, research them like crazy and go on my own.

It's totally a personal decision. When I went to Italy, I stayed in Florence, Venice and Rome. It's easily do-able, if you have the time, to see lots of cities and regions, but if you're on a shorter timetable, one region is better.
But I have to say, if you have the time, go to Rome. It was my favorite city in Italy.

Re: WWYD: Italy question....
I wouldn't go off anyone else's opinion, you have to experience it all for yourself. I went to Venice and Florence (and spent a day in the Tuscan countryside) and now I know when I return to Italy, I'd skip Venice and spend even more time in Florence and Tuscany, as well as explore southern Italy, but I'm still glad I saw Venice.
ETA: I aso agree with not doing a tour. I love to research trips, so I did crazy research and booked everything on my own. With tours you're so regimented and often your hotels are not in the prime areas.

Re: WWYD: Italy question....
I did Venice, Florence and Rome and it was perfect. I also visited London and Paris which made for A LOT of moving around...but just the 3 cities in Italy is a perfect vacation...I LOVED all 3...especially the history and Rome!

Where to start...
On our tour we saw Rome, Pisa, Florence, Milan, Lakes Maggiore and Garda, Lake Lugano in Switzerland, Verona, Venice, Ravenna, Assissi, Pompeii, Sorrento and Capri.
I think where you plan to go depends on what you are looking for in your vacation. We personally loved Rome for the history, Venice because it's like no other place in the world, Florence for the art and architecture, Sorrento/Capri in the south and the northern lake region for their natural beauty. If we go back we'd probably explore the south more. As we moved south it seemed less touristy which was nice. I would have liked to spend more time in Florence so maybe I'll get back to that area some day. For me Venice was wonderful once but too crowded and touristy to rush back to. I think Rome is a must do. It's not as naturally pretty as some other areas but it is just too amazing to walk down the street past a McDonalds and pharmacy and stuff and turn the corner onto the Pantheon or Coliseum! It's pretty great.
