WWYD? Items given to you & selling them?
In hiding - Is it crass/rude/not a big deal etc.???
A friend gives you hand-me-downs. 90% of which was handed down to them (if that matters). You use & hand down some but sell some too.
Do you give the friend the money? If so all of it or some? 50/50 ?
Do you keep it all?
Not even tell them?
Thanks :)

Here is the way I see it: someone gives you things, it's yours to keep! What you do with it after it comes into your possession is nobodies business but yours...

Re: WWYD? Items given to you & selling them?
Sticky situation IMO. People give hand me downs to help someone have clothes, not extra money. What bothers me about this is (NOT saying you) when people take things they don't NEED or can't USE, to then sell and make a profit of cash. So...every senario varies to me but in my gut, feels very wrong to sell something and make cash off of someone's hand me downs. I would rather them be handed down again, or at least given back to the person if you don't need them. Then leave it up to that person to say, I don't want them, do what you want with them. JMO

Re: WWYD? Items given to you & selling them?
If a friend gave me hand me downs, I'd ask if she wanted them back or what she wanted me to do with them. If she said she didn't care & I sold them (which I probably wouldn't do because I'm not comfortable selling something that I got for free FROM A PERSON, not a charity ), I'd give her a gift certificate to a clothing store. Not the full amount but a decent portion.
I give or sell my kid's clothes almost every season. If I gave it to someone, I ask them to pass it on afterwards. There are too many people in the same boat that could use good condition clothes for their kids but may not have the means to get it. If I found out they sold the bags of clothes I gave them & asked to pass on, I wouldn't be angry about it. But I'd probably give to someone else on the next round which is their loss because I give huge garbage bags of clothes out. If they told me - is it ok if I sell them, I'd be fine with it & continue to give them.
If I sold it to them, it's theirs to do what they want with.
I'm a huge believer in passing on goodwill.

I wouldn't sell it. If it was handed down to you FREE....then I personally would pay it forward (ie donate or hand them down again.) Sorry but it doesn't seem right to sell it.

I would never sell the clothing my friends gave to me as hand me downs, but I do pass them on when I am done with them or give them to good will for the tax write off. I would be fine if one of my friends sold, donated, or gave away the clothing I pass along.

I would see if they wanted them back first. If not - sell away!

Re: WWYD? Items given to you & selling them?
Thanks girls! 85% was handed down & the other pieces were sold. The $ was split 60/40 more to the friend & put towards a day trip they are taking. Friend did state that they did not want the items back.
It still feels a little "dirty" to me regardless

WWYD? Items given to you & selling them?
my rule of thumb is that if I didn't buy it - I wouldnt sell it and make money off someone else's dollar.
I have been giving my sister in law our DD's hand me downs for almost a year now. Really good stuff that if they didnt have a girl I would have sold. She now has not had to buy ONE piece of clothing for her dd (I have 2 girls so alot of clothes!) and I just saw her selling some on a facebook selling group. I was VERY pissed about it.

Re: WWYD? Items given to you & selling them?
We didn't get a whole lot of hand me downs since we were the first to have kids.
I give away a lot though. I would not feel bad if they sold something. I don't see it being any different than returning something to a store for credit. I return/exchange a lot.
If I had more time and patience, I may try consigning but it is too much work. I would rather just give away our exersaucer, baby toys, etc. to a friend. If the value was $20 and they ended up selling it, that is fine. I am giving away stuff we no longer need.

I would personally say something. I just don't feel that is right.

WWYD? Items given to you & selling them?
I would never turn around and sell it for money. It just wouldn't feel right to me. If I had no use for it I'd most likely just tell them and have them pass the items on to someone who did need them. Otherwise, I'd pass them along or donate the clothes to the Salvation Army or similar charity. Personally profiting off of another's donated items just doesn't feel right to me.
