WWYD re: Kitchen Floor?

I have a long narrow kitchen. New-ish stainless appliances, new-ish countertop (both courtesy of the previous owners) and I sanded and reddi the cabinets and added new hardware when we moved in ..........
EVENTUALLY we'll gut the kitchen and completely redo it, but that's a 5 year plan porject -

Meanwhile, I have this DISGUSTING CHEAP vinyl floor that NEVER looks clean no matter what I do !! - The rest of the house is hardwood ......

Any suggestions for a relatively inexpensive but easy to clean floor? I don't want to do tile just to have to break it all up in a few years ......... -

Laminate? New vinyl? Hardwood? I don't know !! -

Re: WWYD re: Kitchen Floor?

what about those vinyl tiles you stick down - they are inexpensive and then you don't have to feel bad when you re-do

they actually look pretty good these days- almost like tile with grout

I recommend a laminate floating floor since it would be easier to take up in 5yrs. You could do a tile looking laminate.

have you tried bleach on the floors? I fianlly took a bottle to my bathroom grout and it worked! (that and a scrub buster)

if not, you can just stick down new tiles.

i was gonna say the vinal stick down tiles, too...( they're lineoleum, but look more modern than the sheet linoleum). we did them in our last house when we were in the same situation, and really liked the way it came out. not too expensive, looked really nice, AND easy to take care of!

ETA: you'll probably be able to just stick them down on top of the floor you have now.... thats what we did.

I have a million times -
It's just NOT worth it to get on my hands and knees to scrub this POS floor anymore ...........Besides, I'm 25 weeks PG, so I don't think bleaching is a good idea anymore - Chat Icon

I think I'll look into those peel and stick tile things -

Re: WWYD re: Kitchen Floor?

i have vinyl tiles, that are not peel and stick. they are not totally cheap, but if you don't have a big space, they would be great. i got the giant ones, you know 2'x2'... they are terra cotta looking. i had vinyl flooring before, but thse are much nicer, they came far with vinyl.

Re: WWYD re: Kitchen Floor?

This is the exact situation we are in right now - horrible linoleum floors, not enough $$ to redo the whole kitchen but I desperately want to do new floors of ANY kind.
I have heard mixed reviews of the peel and stick, but I may be going this route too if I can convince DH!!

Re: WWYD re: Kitchen Floor?

Look into linoleum or peel & stick tiles to place over the old flooring.
Might not last a long time but will definitely look a lot better

The laminate that looks like tile is easy to install & nice to walk on. We just installed it in my grandma's house.

The peel and stick are pretty much the same cost as real tile and if it were me, I would put real tile down. If peel and stick tiles aren't put down properly they will lift. I know at Lowe's and Home Depot Expot they have a clearance section and you can get tiles for under close to a $1 a sq. ft.

How many sq. ft is your kitchen?

With any peel and stick you have a greater potential for rework due to its ability to come up, especially when applying over existing peel and stick. Rework often incurs more cost. You should do it right the first time and spend the money upfront.

It's about 9x12 .....It's not the COST of the tile, it's the work to lay the tile properly and then have to bust it all up when we eventually refinish the entire kitchen ........I don't know if we're going to expand, etc.......

I might just be better off going w/ a new laminate - DH hates the fake wood looking laminate, but they make ones that look kind like tile and whatever - right?
