WWYD? RE: Paneling on ENTIRE first floor walls...
We have our living room, one bedroom, and a few misc. rooms downstairs..
The LR, BR, ALL hallways all have panelling (not terrible) but EVERY room is green.
I am thinking of painting OVER it and just leaving the panelling.. DH thinks we should rip the panelling down, re-sheetrock, tape, spackle, etc..
I know that since we own the home, if we are going to do it, we should do it 'right'...
I don't know how much work would actually go into getting this done, and honestly, there is NOTHING wrong with the walls or the panelling that a coat of primer, and a few coats of paint wont fix...
WWYD?
(BTW - Have pictures to post.. apparently I am a bad packer and lost the cord to transfer the pictures to the computer from the camera...)

personally i would rip the paneling down and put sheet rock. but that is just my PO i dont lik the look of paneling. I have it upstairs, and for now it is ok since we dont use that space just yet but if it were main living areas, sheetrock looks much better

I prefer the sheetrock look.. EVERY wall we have in this house is panelled.. and then either PAINTED or has some type of printed wall paper panelling on it.. thankfully they only wallpapered the bathrooms...

Re: WWYD? RE: Paneling on ENTIRE first floor walls...
I would take the paneling down. It is a lot of work to redo sheetrock, tape & spackle. This isn't just one room you are talking about. Does your DH know how to sheetrock, tape & spackle? It's not the easiest thing. It messy and time consuming if you don't know how to do it right. So if you aren't willing to spend the money for someone else to do it, than I would keep the paneling and paint it white or whatever other color you want. GL!

DH is good with construction type of work around the home, I also have my Dad who is good with stuff like that.
I think its more my impatience of getting it done 'now'... KWIM?

do it right now... especially if DH and dad are ready and willing... don't put it off, you will get sick of the panelling REALLY quick, even if it is painted..

Re: WWYD? RE: Paneling on ENTIRE first floor walls...
we are in the same situation, paneling in dinning room and part of the living room (the sellers started to take some down to spruce up the place), and we have it in one bathroom (scary) It is free to take down (just labor) and sometimes they just pin nail it on so really its not that bad when you take it off just a small covering of spakle (sp) skim coat and done! If they glued it then you have to sheet rock a bit but its really worth doing it now then later when you have everything perfect in the house but that.

Re: WWYD? RE: Paneling on ENTIRE first floor walls...
we had paneling in every room (at least one wall of each room) and we took it all down. 90% of the rooms, the walls were in great shape underneath and just needed patching. In the other 10% we re-sheetrocked with thin sheetrock.
We did pay a skimcoater to skimcoat the walls but that was because the wallpaper that was on the rest of the walls ruined the walls.
I am so glad we did it - looks sooo much better.

Re: WWYD? RE: Paneling on ENTIRE first floor walls...
Definitely take the panelling down! You should really see what is going on behind those walls since I am going to guess the house is older considering the amount of panelling you have in your house.
One of our rooms was completely panelled and we tore it down and realized there was old termite damage where the termites at right through the sheetrock! (we knew about the old damage on the other side of the wall and that was taken care of). Well we ripped down the sheetrock to find that they ate right through the studs as well!! Since we were doing that, we decided to tear down the "popcorn" ceiling and re-sheetrock it too, and when the previous owners did the dormer, they must have snipped a wire to the ceiling fan and pieced it together with speaker wire!!! I am so glad we tore it down! We have some more panelling upstairs and in the basement and we will be tearing that out as well.

I would rip the paneling down. My LR had paneling on the walls and Ceiling!!!!!!!! LOL
Just think......if you rip it all down now and put up sheetrock.........you wont have do bother doing it again. It's done and over with! And it will look a lot nicer too.

Re: WWYD? RE: Paneling on ENTIRE first floor walls...
Take it down now, because once you have furniture in, you won't want to make a mess fixing it.
We have these ceiling tiles that I hate and I wish I had replaced them with sheetrock when we moved in. Now it's too much of a mess to do.

Agrred. It will be a lot of work and mess, but well worth it in the end. You might be happy with the paneling for now, but eventually will rip it down anyway, I bet. Just do it now and get it overwith.
