WWYD? Re: Weaing and Breastfeeding at 1 year.
I am going to being to wean Liam next week. He is at Day care from 8:15- 3:20.
I pump twice during that time.
He has two bottles that are formula mixed with whatever pitiful amount I can pump.
Would you A) mix breastmilk/formula and milk for both feeding next week, gradually reducing the breastmilk and ending on only milk by the end of the week.. thus weaning two feedings in one week
B) Mix breastmilk/formula and milk for one feeding.. gradually reducing the breastmilk and ending on only milk by the end of the week for one feeding this week and the do the same for the next feeding during the next week after that.
It is worth mentioning that I do not get engourged at all any more. If I miss one pumping because I get busy at work, I may feel a bit full by lunch time (usually my second pumping it at all) but, not painful AT ALL.
After these two feedings are gone I will wean the rest at one a week or maybe even slower. I am just going to see how it goes.

Re: WWYD? Re: Weaing and Breastfeeding at 1 year.
with DD#2 we went straight to milk a week or so shy of 1 year. i dropped the day feedings and replaced them with milk for a couple days. then i had DH feed her bedtime milk bottles for a few days. i just pumped to feel comfortable and within a week was pretty much done.
DD quickly lost interest in the nighttime bottle so we were just milk in sippy cups during the day. it was pretty painless...

And were you in pain? I only supplement because my body hates the pump. I pump twice a day and I am lucky if I get 3 ounces total
I guess I am just wondering if it would traumatic for him to drop both feedings.. except that those are his bottle feedings anyway.. so probably not.. and you quit cold turkey without any problems!

I didn't wean either. My milk dried up on its own so I didn't experience pain. My DD did fine with the quick transition. I would do what you're comfortable with. If you feel better transitioning over a week, then do that.

Re: WWYD? Re: Weaing and Breastfeeding at 1 year.
I stopped EBF at a year (she didn't take any formula). I continued pumping whatever tiny amount I had left and used frozen BM until the very end.
I mixed the BM with whole milk for 2 weeks or so before I stopped. By the time I stopped BF, she was only accepting the breast in the morning for her first feeding, so it never hurt when I stopped. She only took bottles for the rest of the day.
My feeling for DD was to gradually give her full bottles of whole milk, still giving her some with BM to transition her, but I know giving her whole milk right away would have been okay too. Her ped told me I could have handled it either way.
She did great witih the gradual transition and took to the whole milk right away.
Congrats for making it to a year...feels awesome, right?

Re: WWYD? Re: Weaing and Breastfeeding at 1 year.
I can't even remember the last time I was engorged. DS weaned recently at 15 months. At 12.5 months, I gave up the pump and went down to nursing in the morning and at night. I was probably pumping 2-3 times per day right before I gave up the pump. I had no issues dropping all of the pumping sessions at the same time. My supply was really low at that point and I could probably go most of the day without pumping or feeling full. DS quickly went down to only nursing in the morning. Shortly before he weaned, he spent less and less time nursing in the morning. When he weaned, I felt slightly uncomfortable for several hours the day after. I was completely fine after that. I never leaked or had any problems.
I didn't mix the cow's milk with anything. It did take about a week before DS would drink more than a few sips of milk. I tried a bunch of things and realized that DS would only drink milk if it was warmed up and in a bottle. It took about a month before he was completely off of bottles.

Re: WWYD? Re: Weaing and Breastfeeding at 1 year.
at 1 year Chloe started daycare and I went from 4 nursing sessions to 3 and then 2 (am and pm). I gave her whole milk in a sippy at daycare. She likes it but she still prefers BM. I haven't pumped in a long time, since she was around 5 months. For the past few weeks she has lost more and more interest in BFing, so I took her lead. It's been almost a week and I am painfully engorged but I have been hand expressing in the shower just to stop the pain and it has been working well. Chloe is 14 months now.
I would suggest stopping the pumping sessions and giving him formula mixed with milk or just milk. You could then drop another nursing session in a few weeks.

It's not quite a year. He is 11 months. I figure by the time he is fully weaned, since I plan to let him slowly wean the night and morning sessions it will be a year.
But, yeah it feels great. I have been back to work since September and I just can't stand the pumping anymore. I feel slightly guilty for doing it a month early but, I am sooooo tired of pumping. I feel like crying everytime I have to pump.
I am thinking about following his lead with the first AM nursing. He loves that one and I know that will be the hardest to wean. So maybe I will keep that up for a while. Not sure yet though.
