WWYD? xpost teaching (long)

I am currently on maternity leave and plan to go back on April 14. I am also trying to find a job on LI (I teach in NYC) so I don't have to commute anymore. When I go back to work I will have no days. If I get called for interviews (which I've already started getting calls) then I will have to call in sick and not get paid for the day. I would also jeopardize getting written up for taking days I don't have.

Should I just stay out on maternity leave until sept (money would be very tight) or go back and just take the days as I need them and hope for the best?

I am not getting my classes back. They want me to do a regents pull out program for the rest of the year instead.

My school is in a huge mess as our principal was fired and they are still trying to replace her. There is going to be excessing but I have tenure and there were people hired after me.

Also the BIGGEST benefit would be that I would get to stay home with DD until she is 8 months old. I wouldn't have to cart her around to different people until the end of the school year.

Re: WWYD? xpost teaching (long)

You say money would be very tight, but what if you were to sub on LI until you find a permanent job? Could you find childcare that would be available "on call" like you would need? You're talking about carting DD around to different people, what does that mean? The current job & situation sounds pretty stressful. I would see if you could find an alternative so you can spend more time/energy on the LI job search.

I wouldn't jeopardize a good reputation with taking days off. I would stay out on leave a little longer.

I don't know if I could get a sub job this late in the school year. By carting DD around I mean one day Grandpa watches her, two days an aunt watches her etc.... It would be until the end of this school year. In Sept she will be going to daycare.

I meant subbing here & there. I have friends who have put their names on lists in several districts and get called pretty frequently. It would give you some extra $$ while still out on leave from your other job as well as letting you have the days free to interview.

You definitely would get called on a regular basis! We are always looking for subs in my district.

Absolutely. My friends got called all year long. Teachers take days off/sick days all year, even towards the end of the school year. It's just not a long term sub position. A day here & there is better than nothing. Chat Icon

If you can afford it, stay home until September! That's what I am doing. My dd is 4 months and we're having a really hard time with sleeping at night. I couldn't even imagine if I was back yet. I'm so happy with my decision. It puts off buying a house a little longer, but I don't care!

It's hard for me to say, I don't know your finances, but if you can, it would make sense to stay home till Sept. and look for a job in the meantime. If you haven't already, spend some time going over your expenses if you go back to work, so you can see how worthwhile it is. I was surprised at how much more money I spent when I was working, on lunch, coffee, dry cleaning, clothes, and other miscellani. If you add together all that stuff, plus the cost of child care and commuting, it might not be as worthwhile as it sounds.

I think you can take extended leave in the NYC school system, no? You could always do this until you find another job. You won't get paid, but if you find you just can't swing it and want to go back sooner, your job will be there for you.

Re: WWYD? xpost teaching (long)

I feel like Im in similar situation...
Our Dc are same age...
I work in nyc also, my principal wanted me to come back at the end of 8 weeks because I went out very early on maternity leave (in Nov)

Anyway I decided there was no way I could go back now & decided to stay out til Sept.

So basically I think you should stay out...even if its tight, If you can make it, I would do itChat Icon

Hey Nicole!!! I know its hard going back to work...I'm back but 3 days a wk for now. I would have stayed out longer, but unfortunately we can't swing it financially.
I think if you could swing it financially I would stay home til Sept. I guess like the other girls said if you can sub here and there at least it would be some type of income.
Good luck on your decision....hope it works out for you!!!Chat Icon
