I have had a tough time with this. I try to remember that if someone were to talk negatively about my mom, I would be hurt. Sometimes I think I have said things to DH about his mom that may have hurt him, he gets sensitive about it. I try to be honest without being mean and try not to talk about it when I am at my MADDEST!

My DH is very sensitive about his parents. In the end, he usually will come to see my point of view when I offer a non-commital "I think so-so is hurt. I know your mother would never mean anything by xyz" and then he can continue it on his own. If I say anything like "I was really surprised that your mother xyz (ok was a complete insensitive b1tch---I'm trying to be nice but have my own MIL issues at times)", he defends her & we argue.
