Re: XP: Re: mental illness and family
i haven't been on LIF since my life is chaotic now bc of my dad...but something made me go on tonight just now at 11:35 and this is the post i see.
I wanted to say i'm here for you and i'm going to fm you my email address. My dad was always "the perfect man" for me. He was outgoing, very popular, and could do ANYTHING from painting, electrcical, sewing, cleaning, you name it, he was superman. When i was 16 he was layed off from his job of 25 years. He got into a severe depression and nothing helped. He saw all types of doctors and nothing. One day many months later, he miracously snapped out of it.
Fast forward 2 years. I had to come home from college bc something, we dont know why triggered his depression. This time he attempted suicide. Again he saw a million doctors and nothing. What helped hime this and the first time was his faith. HE WANTED TO HELP HIMSELF THEREFORE HE GOT BETTER. both times he went to church many times a week. both times these "episodes" lasted for months...
Fast forward to this year. Mothers day he looked a little down. Monday he looked worse.By the time i came home tuesday evening he was back to his sick self. he can't sit. constantly walking the whole time. he stutters cant even complete sentences. he can't drive or be by himself. constantly crying. again, he was seeing all types of docs, medications dont agree with him, he was giving himself an ulcer. He made a noose bc he wanted to take his life 2 weeks ago, Right now he's hospitalized. but bc insurance sucks azz in this country, they're letting him go tomorrow. They put him on cymbalta. its not really working either.
Last resort was shock therapy. He had his first session this past wednesday. my mother cried bc she thought after the first treatment it would work. nope. he had his second treatment friday. again nothing. some people it takes 6 sessions, others 12, others it just doesnt work......We're all just praying and hoping and crying and everything....
The difference is this time even the docs say, they think he's given up, They cant get through to him, we can't either. He just constantly says. im sorry, i just feel empty inside...he wasn't even going to church this time around. We are all telling him to put himself first. Hes been working since he was 8 years old taking care of the family. now he has to be a little selfish and worry about himself......
on top of that, my bro has also a chemical imbalance, and anger management problems. ( i think you said your bro is also like this no)
My dad is bipolar....
My point of all this is to say, im sorry, im here for you and please make sure your mother sees doctors. THe faster shes declared bipolar or whatever, the quciker they can start on the cocktail of meds. but also be wary, There are some nasty docs who all they want to do is drug someone up. She needs family. she needs support. but most of all she needs to recognize she has a problem and NEEDS to want to get better.

You and I have touched on these issues before... I see SO MUCH- (I emphasize the SO MUCH) of the same situations with my mom.
So many things (esp about church) is my mother as well....
She has been through Dr.'s, she has been through meds... She has never been diagnosed with anything more than "depression" but like I said in my OP- I strongly feel there is more to it than that!!!
Now I know it takes lots of different dosages and different meds to find the right one, for each individual. Im not sure if they never found the right one for my mom, or if she dosent take the meds consistently enough for them to work....
Mental Illness runs in her family, and like your dad- something triggered her depression. For her, it was my fathers infidelity....
Im sorry you are going through what you are going through right now- Def send me your email address, I have a feeling you and I are gonna become very good friends
