I would call a 24h vet office and ask them whether they think it can wait until morning... he likely should go to the vet... in order to avoid an infection

This has happened to Tonka a few times but he's always fine the next day. Dh even had to rip the whole thing off once

take the pup to the vet. My Rocky did the same thing and didnt notice until he came in the house hours later (he loves being outdoors). Anyway, the vet had to caterize it and cut the nail all the way back. He was on antibotics and had a bandage on it for almost 1 week.
It cost us a few hundred dollars but they had to do it. His nail is all grown back now and its totally fine.
