Xpost from pregnancy: Overfeeding a baby?
Oops. I accidently put this on the pregnancy board, but i meant to put it here.
Can you overfeed a newborn/infant? My DD is almost 1 month. Today, she ate a lot, but she also spit up a lot. I know sometimes infants go through growth spurts, but I feel like often when she seems much hungrier than usual and I feed her, she ends up spitting most of it out. Is there a way to regulate the amount she is eating so she doesn't eat too much? I was thinking of giving her a pacifier after she eats what seems like a reasonable amount and seeing if she takes it.

How much is she eating per day? Did your ped give you a guideline as to how many ounces should be a max at her age?
When my DD was a newborn, I used the Simialc feeding chart to help guide me. I wrote down her feedings/diapers and brought it with me to the ped. I also liked having some guideline for the amount of ounces needed to feed her daily. Similac Feeding Chart

DS went through a growth spurt during his 3rd week - he ate a ton! Maybe your DC is experiencing this?

I would say yes except she ends up spitting up most of her milk.

I was told by my pediatrician and my son's gastroenteroligist who I just saw last week that you can't overfeed a breastfed baby. I thought I might be to because my son is a horse, but she said not to worry.

I was told by my pediatrician that it's better to over feed than under feed-the worst that can happen if you over feed is they spit up. With under feeding the repercussions are much worse. Therefore, if nothing else soothes DC (rocking, diaper change, etc) and feeding does the trick, I would go with it.

PP are right, you can't overfeed a breast fed baby. They have to work to get the milk so when they are full they just switch their suckle and comfort nurse instead od milk nurse if they still have an urge to suckle. As for the spit up, baby's spit up. It will seem like a lot but is prob just a tablespoon or so mixed with drool. As long as she does not look in oain and their is no blood she should be good. Also check her mouth for any white that does not wipe off. Thrush can make baby's spit up. My only other suggestion would be burping more. You may have a fast let down that is causing her to drink faster then she is ready for but usually the baby will choke oe gag when drinking from a forceful or too fast of a let down. Good luck
