Yay/Nay: Buy used Pump in Style for $60 - 2yrs old

I am so tempted to buy this pump from this woman on Craigslist.

She says it is for a Pump In Style (asked her to specify which model) that is 2 years old and has been used for one pregnancy.

Just includes the pump - none of the accessories - as I would want to purchase my own anyhow.

It's kind of a no-brainer right? It's only $60 OBO

I wouldn't buy it unless you know the seller really well.

I used a hand-me-down pump (my sis used hers for a week two years before she gave it to me), but I knew where it came from, I knew it wasn't used very much by the previous person (this was important b/c I've known other people who have had their pumps burn out and need to replace them), and I ordered all new accessories even though I still had the warranty/support from Medela with my sister's pump.

I don't know what I would do in your situation but I got a hand-me-down pump from my SIL that she used for her 5 DCs (not often as a SAHM) and it stills seems to work great, I am now using it for my DD and I used it for my DS for a year (and used it every day as am a working mom). No complaints or issues with it at all!

i would buy it.

you will be replacing the parts that will come ANYWHERE near you....(the tubing, etc..).

i wouldn't. hospital grade pumps are the only ones that prevent cross contamination. you're buying it from a stranger who used it to pump a bodily fluid - then you're going to do the same and feed it to your baby. i dunno - maybe i'm being paranoid, but the LC in the hospital stressed NEVER to buy a used pump.

No way! This is one thing I would never buy used, especially from a stranger.

No I would not. Those pumps are for one user only.

i would from a friend. i got mine from a very good friend who barely used it and just bought new attachments.

i would never buy something like that off ebay or craigs list though--you don't know the person. i just wouldn't chance it.

I wouldn't. As the PP said, hospital grade pumps are the only ones that can/should be used by more than one user. My LC explained to me that hosp grade pumps are "closed" systems so there is no way milk can get into the actual pump. But with pumps like the PIS, there is a chance that fluid can get into the actual pump, so even if you replace the tubing, etc. you can still get cross contamination. But I'm a germ phobe.

Have you checked your insurance coverage? I was able to get a Pump in Style covered at 100%, and all I needed was a script from my OB. I have BCBS of Michigan, though, and live in DC. Not sure what the NY coverage policies are. It's worth a call to your insurance though!

that's something i am just too paranoid about, and i wouldn't do it.

i might borrow one from someone i knew really, really well, but that's about it.

I wouldn't even take a pump from my sister because I knew she and my niece got thrush.

i wouldn't, not from someone on Craig's List. That said though, I am not completely opposed to used pumps-- I borrowed one from a good friend. All parts were sterilized and clean.
