4 1/2 yr old in car seat on plane - Yay or Nay?

I'm taking a trip with my DD and will need to take the carseat since I will need it at our destination. I'm just trying to decide if I should use it on the plane or not. It's a Marathon so it's fairly bulky. She's about 40 inches/35 lbs. - do they require kids to be in carseats at that size? (I haven't been on a plane in 2 1/2 yrs LOL) WWYD?

Nope, they don't require it. We took Alex to Israel a few months ago, at 3 years old, and we didn't even bring a carseat. She just stretched out on the seat and slept lying down.

We brought ours on the plane b.c DD was 15 months. I would check it though for a 4 year old - I would think she would be more comfortable in the airplane seat itself.

ITA. My 2yo hardly has any leg room in her carseat on the plane. I'd imagine a 4yo would be very uncomfortable.

I def wouldn't bring it on the plane. Those seats are tight to begin with. At 4 1/2, you def do not need it. I didn't use one for Andrew when he was 2 1/2.

We've never used the carseat on the plane for DS. So, I'd check it. I put ours in a laundry bag and wrote our last name across it

Id prob take it...

My son has done many trips on the plane, the easiest ones was when he was buckled in his seat.

when I have not brought the seat on the plane, he thinks its a free-for -all and can walk around...

But when the carseat is there, he thinks its like a car ride and knows he has to stay buckled.

My carseat is not all that large (Graco comfortsport) and space has never been an issue.

I say nay. DD is younger than that and we don't bring her car seat on the plane.

I say nay....If you want to use something, I would use this harness seat belt system from Kids Fly Safe

I didn't even think of the leg room. Last time I had her on the plane she just turned 2 so I can see what you are saying.

DD will sit for the ride so she doesn't have to be contained, it's more the safety issue I was thinking about.

Now I am thinking...my friend who we are visiting has 2 children, she might have an extra carseat I can use there.

Thank you for the responses.

If you happen to be renting a car- many rental companies also rent car-seats ...It might be worth it not to have to worry about it ( especially a Marathon, since they are $$) and with all extra fees airlines charge to check stuff nowChat Icon

DS was just over 4 when we were on a plane last, and we had him in his carseat on the plane. He's in it everyday in the car, so he's used to it anyway. It was a flight from NY to Oregon, and he never complained.

Never used the car seat on the plane, and DS has been traveling since he was around 12 months (he's now 2 1/2). We found that the car seat was too big and bulky.
