Yay or nay for a black tie event? UPDATE!
And would I just wear it with a strapless bra? No strap, right? Because that would make me lopsided, no?
ETA: One more question: would this look better slightly shorter or slightly longer on me? I.E. should I get regular or petite? I'm 5'2".
UPDATE: I had fallen in love with the long dress, but I guess I won't be wearing it Apparently due to politics at the hospital, they had to give the award to someone else who nominated himself I'm so mad. FIL really could have used a wonderful evening celebrating him, and I could have used that dress
Hopefully he'll get nominated again next year!!

Beautiful dress!!!
I'm sure the other girls are more up to date on fashion do's & don'ts, but if I received an invite that specifically stated "Black Tie", I'd would wear a floor length gown. That to me seems more semi-formal, but again, I'm old fashioned in that sense and I find that I tend to be over-dressed for most occasions.
As for a bra, definitely strapless. You can't wear a strap because of the opening in the shoulder. It would show the strap and I'm not a fan of the clear straps because they're just as obvious. FWIW, I wore a asymmetrical dress last weekend and used a strap and it didn't make me lop-sided.

Re: Yay or nay for a black tie event?
I'm just looking in the event that I am going to a black tie event, lol. I just found out that my FIL may be given an award at his hospital's ball this year and they invite families to come. It's black tie in that the doctors all wear tuxes, but my MIL always wears a pantsuit. She's never worn a gown so I didn't think a floor length gown was necessary. What do you think?

Re: Yay or nay for a black tie event?
i think that if your MIL wears a pant suit and ishe fits in -- that dress is plenty dressy i don't mean that in a mean way -- just that some people underdress and stick out when they do. i'm sure you know if your MIL is someone who typically dresses appropriately for events. if she is - i think you are all set.
i think keeping the dress on the longer side will make the dress dressier than if you shorten it (or order petitie).
gorgeous dress BTW!

I don't know...MIL tends to under dress for my taste. How about this one for a floor length option?

I LOVE them both. Especially the floor length one- that waistline is to die for!

They're both beautiful. I think you'll be ok with either one.

On second thought, I like the idea of a floor length one since it is in October or November. No need for stockings, lol.

Thanks! It would be such a nice thing for him to win. And if he does, I can't wait to be there!

Re: Yay or nay for a black tie event?
I like them both and think both are good for a black tie event.
With the first one though, because of your height, make sure to get some killer high high heels.
ETA: I'm the same height and find that mid calf length never works for me unless I wear high heels.

Re: Yay or nay for a black tie event?
I love both of them, but for a Black Tie event I would go w/ the longer one. I have a black tie wedding coming up and everyone is wearing longer dresses.

I would go for the floor length one. It is gorgeous. i wear floor length simple dresses ro regular weddings...not even black tie. They are so elegant and make you stand out from all of the knee length black cocktail dresses.

Both are perfect.
I would go with the first one and wear beautiful jewelery and dressy shoes.
