Yay...got my b-day gift but have a question for some of the mommies here
DH surprised me with the Nikon D40
I am so excited to learn how to use this!
I have a question..actually 2:
Any tips on how to get started?
and
He also got me the 55-200mm lens. But is this something that I will need?I thought I would ask for opinions here. Does anyone have this and what is it used for? Would the lens that comes with the camera be enough for my needs?

Enjoy!
Just play around with it on Auto. Definately read the book and try taking pics on manuel so that you can get used to the different settings, lighting, etc.
The 200mm lense is nice. But for me, it is too much. I have the 135 on my list, but if I already had the 200, I would not return it. Take some pics with the regular lense. Then, go to the 200 and see how you like it. It's great for close ups.

YES YES YES YESYES YESYES YESYES YES!
That's the NEW lens that I have compliments of the wonderful women on this site! You will definitely use that lens!
How to start? Charge the battery, load it up, turn it on & shoot, shoot, shoot! You can use the auto settings until you read through the manual.
the 200mm is how you get those candid close ups from across the room of your child.
Happy-Happy-HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

The lens that comes with it is really good so that will do for most of the time. But I'm sure it would be nice to have the better lens as well.

Enjoy -
I have to go back to get my masters degree to figure out how to work my SLR
I have been really shooting on Auto lately - I want to take some time to mess around and really read the manual.
