Yeah, because THIS helped my blood pressure last night!
At 3:30 this morning, I woke up out of a dead sleep to the smell of smoke.  DH woke up immediately as well.
We searched the entire house and couldn't find anything. It was really strong and we were just about to call the fire department, when I saw the fire chief's truck driving down the street with it's lights on and a spotlight shining on all the houses. 2 minutes later, there was a fire truck on our corner.
DH went out to talk to them and they said that someone called them because of smoke in the air in their backyard. We had them come into our house and check every single wall and outlet with the heat-sensing camera. There was nothing going on in our house at all, but the smell was still freaking me out (when I was still living with my parents, our house burned down in the middle of the night - we were all in it at the time - thank God my dad woke up, the smoke detectors were non-functional  )
The firefighters went into everyone's backyard in the neighborhood to see if someone had a chimenea going - I don't know if a cause was ever found.
I actually felt my BP going up minute by minute as we were checking the house over. 
Always something, right?

Wow. I went thru something similar a few nights ago. I woke up and smelt smoke as well. Check the entire house and nothing. I opened the door to the outside and i smelt it outside. Still have no idea what it was.
It's sooo scary!!!Glad it wasnt' your huse!!!

wow!! glad all is ok.
july 3rd we were awoken from a dead sleep by our house alarm going off
ITS NEVER GONE OFF IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NITE..holy crap..we didnt know what was going on.
dispatch is calling, my DH is creeping down the stairs, empty handed no less, and im pacing back and forth. One of the sensors on a window was going bad. I swear..we didnt sleep for 2 days after that..
