Yet another spinoff to holiday tipping- Tipping our building super...
DH and I just moved about three months ago to a new apartment. We were talking this over last night since it's getting closer to Christmas and we're thinking of giving our building super about $50-$75. I told DH that since this guy really helped us out when we were moving in and such that we need to give the higher amount. I feel he went above what he would normally do- he hung a bedroom mirror for us and also helped fix a HUGE issue with our bed which if he didn't help it would have been a disaster.
DH I think wants to go on the cheap side and give him $50 "because we just moved in and there were issues". Also there were a few issues with the apartment (things broke way too easily and we had to have him come and fix it-now we also are dealing with a small leak in the kitchen too which needs to be fixed)
Which amount between the two would you suggest we give? Or should it be a totally different amount?

If anything, $50 is extremely generous IMO. I'd say $30, but $50 if you really really think it was above and beyond.

I would say give him what you would have the day you moved in and he helped you assuming you didn't tip then since I probably would have then). If you just moved in and he hasn't done anything else for you I don't think you have to give a gift for Christmas.

Re: Yet another spinoff to holiday tipping- Tipping our building super...
He did fix the sink today- and I didn't tip him knowing that we'd be tipping him for the holidays.
Our bed was a huge issue when we moved in..for some reason when we had the bed set up the support pegs were too long! So the super actually got his saw and cut them for us.
When we also moved in, the his/her closet bars fell (after only putting 4 hangers on it!) and he got someone literally right away to fix it properly. He was so upset over that happening since it wasn't so much weight on the bar.
And yesterday the diswasher/sink was leaking and today like I mentioned that was fixed...so he's pretty quick and efficient on getting things done.

I've lived in my building for 2 years now, and we are giving our super $50. I think last year we gave him $75, but this year his son threatened to kill me...so he's getting less for harboring a psycho in my building.

$50 is fine. It shows appreciation.
A small tip when he does a repair for you is also appreciated.
If you are friendly with some neighbors, ask them what they feel is a reasonable holiday gift amount. My parents were supers for 30 years. There were some tenants that were quite generous, there were others that gave nothing at all, not even a bottle of wine. My parents did a lot - taking mail and packages, hunting down the monthly rent, repairs, keeping the building clean.

Maybe I am very different, but I wouldn’t tip him, for fixing items that are broken or in need of repair. To me that’s part of his job to get people to fix it.
However i would tip him or give him a nice bottle of wine for helping hang the mirror and for helping with your bed

Do the $50 and maybe some homemade cookies or a bottle of booze

I was thinking of doing that...the booze... (especially beer from what he's said) is a plus with him...

Re: Yet another spinoff to holiday tipping- Tipping our building super...
I would say 30 or 40-since you just moved in . We moved here 3 months before Xmas. We tipped our super $25 , he didn't help us with anything when we moved in (not that he had to, I'm just saying) and we barely saw him , plus he went away for 6 weeks 3 days after we moved in... This year we'll be tipping 40-50 , he helped us with things around the house few times and we tipped him when he did, so I think 40-50 is more than enough.
