Re: yonkers? opinions- hartsdale? westchester help!
we want the croton house- but we have 10 months left on our lease- if it's still on the market in the spring- then we will buy it- otherwise I am sure we will find another home
I love all the advice- like I said I know nothing about westchester- so I will be annoying for the next 6 months asking questions- but I am very thankful!

Re: yonkers? opinions- hartsdale? westchester help!
we live in a townhome in Hartsdale. I'm still not used to living in Westchester. I grew up on LI and I can't wait to move back. Hartsdale is nice. The schools aren't that great but we were not concerned w/that when we moved here. I've noticed that it's mostly a commuter town.

Re: yonkers? opinions- hartsdale? westchester help!
i grew up in edgemont and if looking in westchester would look at hartsdale (if not concerned with school system) and hastings as places to live if commuting to the city is important. we settled in jersey as i figured we were priced out of areas and homes i would want to buy in westchester to raise a family.

A friend of mine lives in Hartsdale. It is a nice area and it is a quick trip into Grand Central.

We are looking at two houses in Yorktown. I'm originally from the BX so it was a big change, but I love it now.

I think I need to stay south of 287
with my husband working on Long Island still and me in Stamford- I think any further north is going to be too long of a drive
luckily my husband works off hours- so he wont hit traffic- this move is more for me

In that case, you may want to consider towns on the other side of Westchester...Mt. Kisco, Bedford, White Plains, New Rochelle.....it would be easier for both of you.

I forgot Mamaroneck, and Harrison as well. White Plains is getting very costly now, but there is also a lot of development there. My husband is a cop there, so I can tell you all about it.

Re: yonkers? opinions- hartsdale? westchester help!
Yonkers is a pretty big city. I really don't know what town to compare it to..Hicksville? Maybe not.
It's just such a big area and for the most part there's some areas near Broadway a few blocks up from the Bronx/Riverdale that I would not suggest looking at. Then again there's a few blocks there that are not bad, but it changes pretty fast. Then as you go north on Broadway or Riverdale Ave (changes to Warburton Ave) it gets nicer again.
Up by Central Ave (that's near Hartsdale I think) it's not too bad from what I can tell.
If you're looking near Cross County Mall or the raceway, those are not bad areas, middle-class mostly. The closer you go to Bronxville, the nicer it gets. I think it's the same way with getting closer to Hartsdale.
Sorry w/o a street name I can't really give you much more of a detailed idea. I know some parts of Yonkers very well as I have friends that live in Yonkers, yet other areas I don't know that well at all.
Hope things go well house hunting there!

Bethy's Dream House
it's really my dream back yard- but it's the smallest house on a great block- Very nice, Croton is a nice town. It's 1 hour commute to NYC though and the Metro North parking lot is a nightmare (it's HUGE) and if you don't get there before 7am it's hard to find a spot. However it's a major hub so there are a good amount of trains that stop there.

Re: yonkers? opinions- hartsdale? westchester help!
Hey Beth-those are great houses.
As Mom-2- Liam said Yonkers is huge. I'm not sure about that area.
I live in the Hartsdale area.
I've heard the elementary schools are fine but the HS isn't great, but I also know someone in that SD that left Catholic School to go back to the public HS & loved it & did very well.
It doesn't have its own district, it is within the town of Greenburgh& is in that SD which covers a lot of areas.
Croton is beautful, but it might be too far from LI.
