Re: You can actually nap while in labor???

I've heard this too, but I didn't. I went into labor overnight and was up for more than 24 hours by the time I gave birth. I couldn't fall asleep for the life of me, neither could DH even though the nurses kept telling us, "Take a nap!" It's kind of a surreal experience and I'd never been "in" a hospital before, plus I wasn't really that comfortable what with the oxygen mask, being forced to lay on my right side--back to DH and several tubes coming out down below...just wasn't happening!!

Re: You can actually nap while in labor???

Um not true for me - I wish! I wasn't blessed with the napping ability during labor (but I also did not get an epidural sooooooo with those contractions coming fast & furious throughout, there was no way I could nap whatsoever Chat Icon) I was only given staydal (not sure of the spelling) and that was supposed to help with the pain and help me sleep.. but all it did was make me LOOPY and kind of sick Chat Icon

By the time I got the spinal towards the very end of my labor (I was already 9 cm dilated), I prob. *could* have slept a bit then.. but within like 20 minutes after that I was 10cm and iit was time to push this little guy out !

I wouldn't change a thing in retrospect though.. my labor & delivery was hard but so rewarding in the end Chat Icon

same here...but 24 hours for me. It was impossible because so the nurses kept coming in every 15-20 mins. to check my blood pressure, temp. and the babies heart rates

Re: You can actually nap while in labor???

Even though I was up all night the night before I went into labor I could not nap. As a matter of fact I think I got about 4hrs of sleep total the entire time I was in the hospital. Too much adrenaline running through me to sleep.

Re: You can actually nap while in labor???

i was at home napping between contractions until I was about 5cm, then I couldn't nap anymore. After the epidural, i was too excited to nap.

Re: You can actually nap while in labor???

I don't know if I would call it napping or just sheer exhaustion. I was able to catnap between contractions up to being 7cm dilated. After that, no, I didn't nap. I did go to 10cm before the epidural and they let me sleep for about 30 minutes before I had to push.

Best advice I got throughout my whole pregnancy...The harder you push, the faster it's over. That is all I could think about and I pushed Molly out in about 25 minutes.

Sure you can nap...when you're doped up on Stadol or Demerol. But I think they only give you that under certain circumstances, and before the epi. I can't speak for labor past 4cm because I never got any further than that.

I didn't have an epidural so no I definitely didn't nap. I would think if the epi took the pain completely away though you could definitely nap depending on how long it takes you to dilate.

I felt much more relaxed after having the epidural, but not relaxed enough to nap!

Re: You can actually nap while in labor???

I will say that once my son was born after the 30 plus hours of being in labor... I held him and made sure he was ok - handed him off to the nurses for tests and PASSED OUT. Don't even remember closing my eyesChat Icon

Re: You can actually nap while in labor???

There is nnnnoooooo way you're napping unless you have an epidural or something...... I even had a hard time falling asleep after I had my daughter... I think with all the excitement and just wanting to hold her I couldn't sleep a wink for 24 hrs.

I only had 4 short hours of constant contractions...the thought alone amazes me. I imagine women who nap are heavily sedated via the epidural...otherwise they are LYING.Chat Icon
