You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar...
How much do you believe in this statement?

I agree with that. I hate that you sometimes have to be nasty for people to respond but overall I think it's easier to be nice.

Re: You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar...
I ask because I had an experience today where I had to express complete and total dissatisfaction for a service knowing full well the situation was not going to change. By being articulate and polite, my situation was rectified and I ended up with something I didnt ask for that more than made up for my disappointment.

That's great!!!!
Personally, I know I will respond much nicer to someone being reasonable and polite then to someone barking at me.

You're totally right Leslie.
When it's something where I stand to be compensated or if it directly affects me, I am sweet as pie.
If it's not something I care about, all bets are off and the gloves come on!!!

I agree. There are times where I've ranted and raved and gotten nowhere, and times I've really wanted to, but held back, was as sweet as pie and things went in my favor.
Having worked at an IT helpdesk, and being on the other end, I'll tell you we were a lot more apt to be helpful & understanding to someone who was nice and polite than someone who told us how everything that went wrong was our fault.

I try to be nicer now... but, sometimes I cannot hold back. I let my anger get to me.
eta-- so I believe in the statement, but sometimes it does depend on the situation.

Re: You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar...
Sometimes true, not always.
I try to start out with honey but there was an ongoing situation with someone I had to deal with through work, and it was only rectified after I told that person's superior that his employees had no competence whatsoever. I had some clear examples, but my language was .

Re: You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar...
I always wondered why I'd want to catch flies in the first place
I do think that being nicer (as long as it is not overdone & completely transparent) is more effective in getting people to notice you in a positive & long-term way.

Re: You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar...
I completely agree. I try to get my MIL to see this but she just can never ... she can be so rude/nasty/inconsiderate of people (in shops, while driving, on the train, service people, etc...) ... I'm always saying "You know if you ask nicely, people will respond." When you are nasty, they will be nasty back. It's soooo frustrating!

Re: You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar...
I completely agree! I always speak to people politely and respectfully when I have a problem that I am trying to resolve. I also had a customer service type job while in school and the quickest way to not get help from me is to be rude and disrespectul!!!

In most cases this works unless you are trying to get something from cablevision or verizon. In those cases you have to b!tch up a storm.

Re: You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar...
It's totally true.
I work for several attorneys, 2 of them with offices right next to each other and right in front of my desk. One of them always has me on my toes and drives me crazy but I don't mind at all because he's always nice to me. I do my best work for him, and I do it ASAP.
The other I call Frosty. He can't even bring himself to address me sometimes - he'll just drop things on my desk as if I'm not even here to accept them. While I'd never intentionally do a bad job for anyone regardless of how they treat me, he has to wait for his stuff to get done because I REFUSE to jump for him. Nasty SOB that he is.

I think it is very true...I think no matter what, if you're nice and patient with people despite of how they treat you, eventually you'll be rewarded for it and they will be paid back...one way or the other...(I should practice what I preach though LOL).
