You know how sometimes you just need to talk things out to "get it" **This is parenting related**
Okay, so I have recently come to the realization that things are too tight financially for me to not work. If we ever want a house I need to work.
With that said, I am starting a serious job search. What I need help with is figuring out what we should do as far as childcare goes. I would like to get it set before I really get into interviews and such.
We do not need full time daycare, but we'd benefit more from a babysitter/gramma/or something of the sort.
DH works 4 days on 2 off, the first 2 days he works 4p-1a and the second 2 days he works 8a-5p. So the need for care varies from 16-26 hrs a week.
We live in Queens (Ozone Park)
My parents live out of state, so they are not an option. FIL works full time (usually til 7pm), not an option. MIL works full time-owns/operates a deli six days a week, which is 5 min from our house, but she lives in Lake Grove. DH's sister, brother and SIL work full time, so they are not an option.
I am not sure where to look for this part time/rotating care. I would prefer someone close to home. Any advice on where to look????
I wrote all this in hopes that something would just pop into my head! No luck...

Well, first off, we are in a similar situation and I found a job that I really like (I am starting Wednesday) realtively quickly.
I posted about something similar with childcare earlier today and got a lot of great advice. My DH works rotating schedules too, so we'd need care max 10 hours a week, and the least 4 hours a week.
I think the suggestion we are going with is I am going to call the colleges around me, ask for their elementary ed department and see if they have a list or a recommendation of a babysitter.
Is your DH a cop? Mine is FDNY, do you guys have the schedule's way in advance? We do, so I can tell the person we hire when we will need them way ahead of time.
Good luck! I know it is a hard decision, but being financially more stable is a good thing too.

You can try posting on Craigslist and then run your own background check, use a service or go to your church and request a list of providers that provide care for children.

Yes, he is a cop ( he hates that I publicly post what he does, but come on!). His schedule rotates, 4 on 2 off, 4 on 2 off. Unless he has to work overtime, it's set.
I never thought of calling local colleges. Maybe I will do that. I've considered posting on Craigs list, but I am clueless at how to do a background check. Suppose I could get DH to run their name
Someone mentioned she had found her childcare at a playground....maybe I need to start hitting them! There are so many so close to our house!
I appreciate any/all advice!!

I found my child care the playground so its possible! But you may want to think about putting your DC in a permanent type placement- the rotating schedule is going to be difficult to adjust to I think. Just an idea

I would consider that, but I know that the salary I'd make would pay for daycare with little left over- that is not feasible to me.

Maybe you can find another mom in the same situation and cover hiring someone for full time between the two of you. Sometimes the nanny would have two kids but that shouldn't be a problem.

Got it- but have you looked into in home care? My person charges only $4 an hour and she is awesome. I wish I could recommend her but she is here in LA.

The other question is can you get a job that rotates opposite your hubby's job? When I worked at a university there was a woman who worked different hours each week. Her husband was a fireman, and she would work on the days he was home. That was an admin job though, not sure what you do... She was working below her skill level in exchange for the flexible schedule and no need to pay for childcare.

I tried this with the job I left when I had DS, but they wouldn't take me back witht he rotating Hrs. I am hoping to find such a job, that'd be GREAT! In a perfect world.
