You know, my job called me
To ask me why I was working from home. They sounded surprised when I said how treachorous it is by me, and my supervisor sounded shocked and told me everyone else came in. He made me take a sick day, which I'm fine with. I told him I'd still do the work I said I was going to do.
Am I over reacting by not feeling safe driving today?

not overreacting -- roads were really bad earlier.... but didn't you call in to let them know you'd be out?

Re: You know, my job called me
You are not at all!! All the traffic reports early this morning said not to drive if you didn't have to. They said there were accidents EVERYWHERE and nothing was plowed or salted yet.
Now that it's noon and raining it might be another story... but earlier... no way!
I love how they make you feel bad for trying to be safe... I cannot STAND that mentality....

Re: You know, my job called me
wait - even though you're working from home, they're making you take a sick day? As long as the work gets done, who cares where it gets done from
I'd challenge that if you can - or I'd stop working for the day if you're going to get charged

They're probably just calling because it turned into all rain. Maybe people came in late after the snow melted?

my boss tried to play if off to, that the roads were fine! we came in but i was a few mins late and I left early. my other co-worker couldn't pull in the driveway here she kept spinning out.
IMO- NO JOB is worth risking my life for. its the other jack@ss's on the road that could hurt or kill me, and I'm not risking my life for my office. Sorry just not doing it!!

not sure how your company works, but in my company, will fill out on an online timesheet of what we did during the day. If you're sick to the point where you can't do any work, you bill it as a sick day. Same with vacation days. Those types of days, when they're billed and entered as such, assumes you are not working.
If you can work from home, it still counts as a work day regardless of where you're doing the work. Not sure why that should matter.

Re: You know, my job called me
I prepped my boss yesterday that I would be working from home if it was bad today. I called him today and he was telling me that the roads by him and at work were not that bad, but he still let me work from home. I already completed 3/4 of the things i had to do and I had already set a precedent that if the weather is bad, I work from home. My boss knows I do the work, so he does not have a problem with it. Have you done this in the past? Just show them that you do the work - prove it to them and they should not have an issue.

Re: You know, my job called me
I am working from home today, I couldn't get out of my driveway this morning and the first plow didn't come around until 930 this morning....and I'm on a very steeped hill road...no freakin way.
and IMHO....I started working at 830 this morning while people didn't get in until 10:30 b/c of traffic, & while normally I have a horrid guilty conscious when working from home I do not this time... we are given the choice to work from home or not when needed.
and as a side note....I've been very productive today because no one has been able to stop at my desk and stop me in the middle of what I was doing!

Re: You know, my job called me
I don't get this mentality that employers have. As long as you are getting the work done- and they know that and you prove that- what difference does it make WHERE you are? What does sitting in the office do to make you more productive? Nothing!
They treat us like we are all children who need supervision. Ridiculous!
And as a PP stated- most people would be getting in WAY late today- so if you can start working at 830 am- versus 1030 or so if you had to drive in- then you are actually MORE productive.
I, for one, was online at 7 am this morning- if I would have went in, I'd venture to say I would have started working 3 hours later. But I'd be a big hero for risking my life on the roads.
Makes NO sense!

Re: You know, my job called me
Listen if you have the ability and they gave you the ability to work from home then they can't make you take a sick day if you are working from home. I would call your HR dept. I came to work because I take the train to the city and it's a 5 minute drive to the train station from my place. My sister didn't go to work because she has a 20 minute drive plus she wasn't about to take the baby out in these conditions to drop her off at daycare.

I called and said I was working from home, which I am - and have done in the past, today for some reason they weren't happy about it. Things change day to day there depending on the mood of my boss!!!
ETA - this came from my boss - this is a small operation - no HR department!
Also, I wanted to get this project done....

Re: You know, my job called me
If your job gives you the opportunity to work from home, then that is NOT a sick day. If I'm taking a sick day, I'm certainly not going to spend it working.
The roads were bad enough that I almost turned around and went back home b/c i was slipping and sliding all over the place. My coworkers were surprised that I made it in, and a lot of people are absent.

Re: You know, my job called me
I don't have the work at home option, so I left earlier than usually and drove slowly, from Ronkonkoma to Manhasset. Roads were okay, I am sure for the rush hour home they should be cleared.
You do what you have to and feel safe doing.

Re: You know, my job called me
I'm surprised at the responses.
You don't call to let your employer know you're working from home. You call to ask permission to work from home. It's a perk.(not *you* Liza, for all I know you did ask)
As for what does it matter as long as the work is being done, it does matter to some employers. If everyone else made it in, there is no reason why one person shouldn't make the same effort.
I know the hill is treacherous where Liza ives. I've dealt with it myself. However, where you live isn't your employer's problem - just as it isn't their problem if your kids' school has a 2 hour delay (as mine did). I took the day off today but am still answering emails because IMO being available is part of the job and it's not the time to be punching a clock.
eta. I just realized I didn't answer the question. I think the roads are ok since it's raining. Later tonight when the temperature drops it's going to ice, so it depends on how far you work. As long as my daycare was open & the trains were running, I always went in.

Re: You know, my job called me
a career isn't worth risking your life for either
nothing is
if you don't feel safe driving- you shoudln't
I once had to drive from my house in queens to Melville for a presentation- in the V-day ice/snow storm a few years ago- and my boss actually debated with me about driving to office in CT after
not worth it- I didn't end up going- I still don't get why someone would even want you to risk it
