I hate to be so leery of people but this just shows you never really know who you are living next to. Just awful. That poor child.

eta - no matter how old the child was though, still scary that such an animal was living on the block

That is awful. Chat Icon

But- what is 3 year old doing riding her bike by herself.
And she was climbing the ladder into this guy's pool? She could have drowned even if this animal didn't grab her.

I just can't imagine letting a THREE year old out alone like that.

Exactly, why was she outside by herself? Not to place blame on the parents but WHAT were they thinking?

I agree. I guess in some towns people trust their child is safe outside.

ETA- she was 3

Yes, she was 3.

I dont care WHERE YOU LIVE, you dont let a 3 year old out on her bike alone. I would never, no matter how safe the neighborhood is supposed to be.

Yeah 6 I could understand more. (I don't think I would do it, but I can see it a bit more than a 3 yr old)
But THREE?
How do you let a 3 yr old out of your site? And on a bike? What if she rode into the street?
And she was trying to climb in someone's pool!

I honestly thought I read she was 6 and so I thought, ok, they trusted her on their block. But 3? OMG.

Not saying how I feel about 6 but I could see someone being ok with that? But 3? OMGChat Icon

Maybe, but a three year old is much more likely to disappear into a strangers yard when unattended than an older child..and a 3 year old has way less defenses.
I'm sorry but as terrible as this sounds, the parents ARE to blame for this. Who lets a THREE year old ride their bike alone?? I don't care what kind of block you live on...you always watch a child like a hawk at that age. I don't get it.

I know they are prob. filled with guilt and grief, i don't mean to say they should suffer for it but they are to blame...

It's sort of awful to say (which is why I hesitated) but it's true. And if she hadn't died in this horrible way, what's to say that she wouldn't have run into the street and been hit by a car - or drowned in the pool she was trying to get into?

I am just so, so sad for her that her last moments were with this monster. There has to be a heaven if only to accept angels like this Chat Icon

Really? Yes parents should watch their children closely at ANY AGE... but there are plenty of missing children older then 3 that are killed by these animals that wonder off. Especially with this being their neighbor? At 10 years old I wouldn't have thought twice about helping my neighbor in their yard with something. Would I wonder off and go into anyone's pool without my mother knowing or asking their permission, NO. But there are many children who would.
IMO Parents are partially to blame bc of the child age and lack of supervision, but in the end.. KNOW YOUR NEIGHBORS and TEACH YOURS CHILDREN THE DANGERS

I think you misunderstood my reply...yes, that man was a disgusting monster who is to blame for this poor childs death..he should ROT.

However, the parents have a part of the blame because a three year old is totally defenseless and thinks very differently than an older child.

And its true that things like this happen to older children BUT i'm sure the percentage goes way up for this happening to a much younger child than an older one.

I know that my almost 5 year old can asbord a lot of my warnings a hundred times better than my 2 year old. In both cases i still watch them and never take my eyes off of them, but a three year old would just really not ever hesitate to go where they're not supposed to and I know Johnny pretty much asks me all the time when, where, why etc...

Makes no sense why this guy did this though. Why couldn't he just take her home???

I agree. IMO a 3year old has no business playing outside ON THE STREET ALONE! Forget about the small possibility of being kidnapped, but what about being hit by a car. NOt that it is any excuse for what this monster did, but, people really need to be more sensible.

Chat Icon I can not believe this thread. I don't give a RATS ASSS what the situation was she was MURDERED by a MONSTEER. SHAME on those of you that are tip toeing around saying the parents basically killed her. At least have the balls to say what you mean instead of pretending you aren't judging them. We all parent different, and YOU don't know the situation AT ALL! You have NO IDEA and this is just disgusting. I don't care if YOU wouldn't parent this way...they did and now have to bury their child. Wouldn't we all be so lucky as to live you the perfect world or at least have our kids be raised by the perfect LIF mommies and daddies. DisgustingChat Icon

I think that everyone who has responded thought it was horrible and that this person was a monster.

This is not the first time a child has been killed who should not have been on their own and I think people get annoyed that other parents are not responsible and watch their children.

IMO a 3 yr. old should not be out riding alone let alone to be out of a parent or responsible adults sight.

I feel horrible for this family and I can't imagine what they are going through but maybe this is an opportunity for them to teach others about watching their children. Nothing is more important than taking care of your children.

I feel TERRIBLE for the parents. It's an awful awful thing what happened to their poor innocent child.

But you cannot fault ANYONE for feeling a bit judgmental over situations like this.

If your babysitter/parent/caregiver was watching your child...and let your child bike alone on your street and goes missing or hit by a car, or something as awful as this...do you not place an ounce of blame??? I guess i am a bad person cause i sure as hell sit here and wonder why a THREE year old is biking alone.

Same goes for any other situation like this. If you choose not to buckle your kid into a carseat, or if you let them outside without watching them and something awful happens, then who IS to blame?

By "blame" i mean "hold responsible". We are all held accountable for our actions. IF the truth is that this child was not being watched while she rode by herself, then someone is to be held accountable.

This is different than accidents out of our control (car accident, freak accident etc..).

Its a sad and awful situation and my heart really does hurt for the parents. They prob didn't think about it...they thought it was ok and safe for their daughter (i assume) but this terrible thing happened as a result...I don't think any of us are disgusting for feeling this way about a preventable tragedy!
