Have you all seen the articles and chatter surrounding the MOMO Challenge on You Tube and You Tube Kids and the other videos that have been inserted within a channel or streamed video?

Re: You Tube & You Tube Kids - Momo Challenge and Suicide Instructional Videos

All I know is that I cannot open up Facebook without seeing that nasty a$$ face pop up all over.

I haven't seen anything myself when my boys are on, but they haven't been watching too much youtube videos lately bc we've been too busy. I prefer to just leave on teen Nick or something so I can see what they're watching or let them play PlayStation.

It's a scary world and there are some SICK, SICK people out there.
Now another thing to worry about.

They are on chromebook a lot for school and of course they finish their work and play games so now I have to keep an eye on it.

My boys are 9 and 7. I do tell them there are crazy people in the world and they may see and hear things, but they are not good people.

A friend posted this on FB yesterday. Dd watches videos on there and I remember awhile back DH mentioned about some violent stuff coming up but we only noticed it that one time.

Re: You Tube & You Tube Kids - Momo Challenge and Suicide Instructional Videos

I don't let my kids (8 & 3.5) use their tablets often but when I do, we're not constantly monitoring them. They are on YTK and watching videos of kids opening and playing with toys or barbie videos or peppa - things like that.

I deleted the app from my phone and was going to delete from their tablets too. But should I use this as a teachable lesson? My 8 yr old will get it but my 3 yr old won't.

I doubt a 3 year old would even understand that suicide stuff so I wouldn't be too concerned.
More than anything they will come to you complaining that their video stopped.

Re: You Tube & You Tube Kids - Momo Challenge and Suicide Instructional Videos

My husband sat my girls down this morning to talk about it. They are 11, 10, and 5. We talked with the older ones differently than the 5 year old. I'd be lying if I said I never walked out of the room while they are watching YouTube, so I felt we needed to address it. My oldest knew about it...she said there is a makeup challenge with that scary face that she heard about at a birthday party last week. We have addressed suicide straight on in the past and explained that they need to call or tell us if they see or hear anyone talking about these things or if they ever feel uncomfortable. My younger one we explained that sometimes people make scary videos and tell kids to do things that can hurt them but most people are good and she should tell us if she ever sees anything not normal.

Yeah -I thought about that too. But have you seen the MOMO face? It's really scary! I don't want him coming across that and getting the shit scared out of him.

My kids only watch YouTube on the tv so we can see what they're watching. Thankfully we've never had an issue but I definitely think we need to talk to our 6yo about letting us know if anything strange or scary comes up. Wtf is wrong with this world?

We have never allowed our DD to watch youtube. I just never saw the good in it. In your case, I would just delete their apps and say it wasn’t working anymore or something like that. I wouldn’t go into it any deeper given their agea.

They really need to put the security and privacy pressure on YouTube the same way they did with FB.

From Forbes:

“The main problem”, she said, “was not the phenomenon itself but that professionals and parents were sharing Facebook posts about Momo without checking on its validity. It has become a viral topic, founded more on scaremongering headlines than well-researched facts."

It's just an urban legend that people keep posting about and giving it more leverage. I don't think one person has ever had proof that it was even seen. Just people forwarding stories without getting the facts first.

I aksed my 5th grade son if he ever saw Momo. I was shocked when he said yes. I asked him what she said and he said "challenges for kids to do bad and dangerous things!" I almost died. He said he only saw it once.

My DD is almost 7 and I deleted YouTube from her tablet and my phone. At first she was upset but she has seemed to have gotten over it

You Tube & You Tube Kids - Momo Challenge and Suicide Instructional Videos

From Snopes (DON'T go to snopes unless you want to see the stupid Momo face all over; it appears like, 50 times in one article Chat Icon )
A good deal of skepticism remains that the existence of the Momo challenge may be far more hype or hoax than reality, with many critics citing the paucity of screenshots and videos documenting interactions with Momo:

“The Momo thing is much more akin to an urban legend right now,” said ReignBot, a YouTuber famous for videos exploring creepy things on the Internet. ReignBot’s video about the “Momo Challenge” has more than 2 million views.

“People are claiming what Momo is and what Momo does, but not that many people have actually interacted with the account,” she said. “Finding screenshots of interactions with Momo is nearly impossible and you’d think there’d be more for such a supposedly widespread thing.”

Larry Magid, a technology reporter, also tweeted that the game is “likely a hoax.”

Nonetheless, reignited fears over “Momo” continue to pop up in social media posts (such as the Facebook post embedded above), sensationalized news reporting from the likes of the Daily Mail (“seven-year-old boy tells his school friends doll-like creature would kill them in their sleep”) and the Sun (“Momo ‘suicide game’ warning after schoolboy, seven, told pals the creepy character would kill them in their beds”), and police warnings not based on any verified reports about the game. There's also this out there too.

I just deleted the app on my phone and their tablets. Neither one of them were upset.

Getting rid of you tube is not an option for us.
I'm not too concerned to be honest.
I really think it's more of an urban legend.
And I also saw that they contact kids on what's app?
I don't even know what that is, but I can assure you she has no messaging apps so....

It’s a messenger app, a lot of people use of for international communication or to chat when you are cheating.
:/

I don’t think you have to delete you tube just have to monitor it and if your kids are older speak to them.

My son got in trouble for looking up crazy crap on there, so buh bye iPad. I told him if he isn’t mature enough to do the right then it goes. I don’t have time to baby sit a device on top of work, feeding him, and making sure he does what he’s suppose to do in school. This is why at 10 he doesn’t have a phone.

I agree with you 100%

But I think the kids contact the 'momo' via WhatsApp.

Eh this Momo challenge thing may be an urban legend, but there's plenty of other inappropriate stuff on youtube and youtube kids. Youtube isn't able to monitor the millions of videos posted daily, and literally any psycho in any corner of the world can upload whatever they want.

Which is why I believe these "suicide instruction videos" are cropping up now- BECAUSE of the media coverage for this stupid Momo crap. That people are just making them now and not that they've been rampantly circulating. And every time someone forwards the video, even as a warning, it now spreads.
