Your Take On Spending Money On Baby - POLL

Just curious as to what's your take on spending money on the new baby...

Are you the type who goes all out and gets the best or the type who doesn't mind abit of charity?

Re: Your Take On Spending Money On Baby - POLL

For me personally it is asinine to spend lots of money on baby clothes except for special occasions. I am getting a great stroller(as a gift) because I live in a city and need to be able to get around easily with 2. I am gettinbg lots of hand me downs from my friend since she had twins 2 yrs ago. I would take clothes but I don't know many people who have boys

Re: Your Take On Spending Money On Baby - POLL

I think its about what you have and what you know. If you spend beyond your means to put a label on your kid, then perhaps you need to reevaluate. But if you are of great means and can afford to buy as you wish without putting yourself in the hole, it is fine. Its the same logic I used when planning my wedding. I went over the top on certain things that others found unnecessary and excessive for "just one day." Nobody's business.

That being said, I am still not going to buy my daughter the $85 Burberry tights - but only because they are simply butt ugly.

Re: Your Take On Spending Money On Baby - POLL

I have to admit, I am not a huge fan of hand me downs. I guess b/c when I was younger, that was mostly what I had and it didn't always sit well with me. So I plan to buy DD whatever I want, hopefully without making her spoiled. I think there is a fine line b/w having what you want and being spoiled. But I would not purchase these things if we could not afford it, certainly not.

Re: Your Take On Spending Money On Baby - POLL

Our baby is going to get what we can afford. We will spend more on items that I think are more important for safety. But I won't spend more on baby clothes than I would spend on my own.

I am all about hand-me-downs. I grew up in a large family and we always had them, we shared everything. To me it just makes sense. My sister has a 1 y/o daughter and my brother has a 2 y/o son, so I figure we are covered either way.

So far I know we are borrowing a swing, exersaucer, bouncy seat and pak 'n play. My siblings aren't using them anymore, so why let them go to waste?

My whole view changed on this with my second child. The first time around I didn't want anyones hand me downs. This time around I am gladly accepting them Chat Icon When you see what good shape the clothes are in because if they get to wear an outfit once you are lucky then you understand how it's hardly a hand me down. That being said I also add in new pieces and they are affordable ones Chat Icon You don't have to spend a fortune to dress a child beautifully....

I think you need to get the best with what you have.

I don't understand buying $$$$ on baby furniture if you don't have the money for it. There are lots of options in many price range.

It's about prioritizing what is important for you and your family also.

Some spend $$$ on a stroller, some spend $$$ on furniture. Some like me went middle of the road on everything and it worked for us. I got everything on sale/clearance.

I think there are certain things that are worth spending a lot of money on, and others where it's just not necessary. But, this is how I feel about most things I buy/spend money on.

ITA -
This is also my first baby so I'm excited about buying .........Am I going to put myself in debt for a $1200 crib? Absolutely not - But I'm going to damn well shop within MY means -

I'm already encountering my MIL and others like her who have that IRRITATING "That's NOT necessary" attitude - Not EVERYTHING in life has to be a necessity !! WHY do I bust my tush at work if I can't ejnoy some of that hard earned money by spending it in a way that makes me happy? Shopping for my baby, designing a nursery, getting everything organized and ready and blah blah - that's going to make me happy

Re: Your Take On Spending Money On Baby - POLL

I checked #2 (the best MY money can buy). But then again, this is my attitude overall.

I feel no qualms spending a lot of $ on items that will stick around for a while (ex. a dining set) or on food (the polish saying goes 'you either hand your money to the butcher or the Dr.')

However, to make sure our budget stays in check, I also economize with other items.

Scone's nursery is the same way. The furniture is good quality yet inexpensive, since it won't transition into kids furniture. the sheets are also designer, yet inexpensive. the organic mattress, stroller, and high chair are all very high end... and the diapers and emergency formula are organic.

In the end, it's a middle class budget, but there are definite splurges for Scones health and pleasure.......

Re: Your Take On Spending Money On Baby - POLL

Im so not into the whole expensive baby furniture thing because I have YET to meet someone that actually has used the "lifetime" features beyond a toddler bed. Usually they have more kids or whatever it is used for that instead.

Everyone has their splurges and I am sure I will spend more on some things others would not.

Re: Your Take On Spending Money On Baby - POLL

I'm a true believer in you give what you can afford. I tend to go crazy with some things, but never beyond my means! Thank g-d at this point DH and I are doing relatively well (knock on wood) that if I wanted to spend a stupid amount of money (which I have already) on something I could, but at the same time, I refuse to buy her something she's going to wear for a second and spend 100's of dollars on. I'm a huge fan of Century 21 and Denny's sales, I love when I get compliments on things and I got in on a crazy sale, I always brag about that, unlike some ppl I know that brag about oooh I spent 1000 dollars on this piece of paper....I think if you have do that, you have to prove something, and I have nothing to prove...I love the finer things in life, and will want my daughter to have only the best, but within reason, there is no reason for her to have guccii maryjanes for $225 that will fit her for a day....(unless of course someone buys them for me as a gift ;) )

Re: Your Take On Spending Money On Baby - POLL

I am buying a fairly expensive crib and stroller, both of which I can afford. The rest of the stuff will be in a more "reasonable" price range. I have no problem with hand me down clothes. My SIL gave me a bunch of stuff the other day and it is all in excellent condition. As long as there are no puke/poop stains on it, I'm cool.

this is how i feel although with #1 i did accept hand me downs, now with #2 i'll gladly accept even more!

i bought the absolute minimum to get by for infants. i'm saving the $$$ for when it will be more "important", when DD's are older and want to fit in with brand names and such. i'll buy for them as i do for myself - never full price, within reason, but with an occasional splurge...

Re: Your Take On Spending Money On Baby - POLL

he will get the necessities and some luxuries within reason. I feel that it is okay to spoil him under certain circumstances and refrain under others. My son will know the discipiline of hard work and the value of a dollar. he will understand how they are related. I want to give my son many of the things I was not afforded as a child, such as a car when he is ready to drive. However, he will drive a Honda, not a Mercedes and have to contribute in some way to the insurance.Chat Icon
