Your thoughts on Dr's who do not participate with any insurance company
I am trying to find out if I am healthy enough to have another baby. I am seeing an excellent OBGYN but he needs to send me to a blood specialist. The specialist no longer takes insurance. My out of network is a $5000 deductible.
I know he is an EXCELLENT Dr and I would put my life in his hands. But part of me feels rubbed the wrong way bc he doesn't take insurance. He's a Dr, he is supposed to want to help but every patient that he sees is going to have to pay big bucks to be there.
Am I wrong for feeling this way?
Thoughts?

Re: Your thoughts on Dr's who do not participate with any insurance company
I would think he got tired of being jerked around by insurance companies. At the same time, I would expect more personalized service with true consultations, more personalized care and easier access to the doctor since the need to get the patients in and out quickly wouldn't be necessary since he is earning more then copays and per patient visits from the ins company.

ditto
also, I think (could be wrong) not all insurance companies will sign on a doctor, either. I think sometimes if there were issues in the past with the doctor, it may be easy for them to be denied? or something? I could be wrong though.

I agree with this. Unfortunately, DR's don't have to participate in insurance. And clearly, he must be able to get clients if he has a practice.

A few of my docs don't take insurance. It's not thousands to see them so I pay for it and submit it out of network but it sounds like you have a high ded HSA plan or something like that.

I agree with the above pp. For the most part, I do not go to doctors not in my plan. Earlier this year I chose a breast surgeon who takes no insurance at all, but she is the best, so I went with her. Her office was great about working the bill out with me and waiting for me to get reimbursement from the insurance company.

Re: Your thoughts on Dr's who do not participate with any insurance company
A friend of mine goes to a GP who charges something like 250-300/visit no insurance taken. She says it is worth it because instead of running a factory the doctor makes real appointments, spends much more time with her, she never feels rushed and rarely has to wait. I guess my doctors schedule 8 people in for each 15 minute slot so I'm always waiting, but I think her doctor allocates 45 min/appointment. She thinks she gets better care...
I can see the pros and cons. One more way our healthcare system is broken...

Re: Your thoughts on Dr's who do not participate with any insurance company
I don't feel the same way.
People become doctors for a million reasons - and one of them is to make money. They have families to feed, a medical school loans to pay, etc.
With health insurers paying less & less, I could see why a doctor wouldn't take insurance. When I get my EOBs back, I'm shocked at how little they get from my insurance company.

I have some serious issues going on and I know that this Dr is one of the best. He is well known and well known on these boards too. So I think i am still going to go to him if I get the green light from my obgyn to get pregnant.
