Your thoughts on power lines...

We saw a great house in a great location...but...there are towering powerlines about 150 feet away. It is kind of an eye sore, and I would be worried about resale.

What are you thoughts about the dangers and "eyesoreness" of powerlines.
Thanks!

Re: Your thoughts on power lines...

I grew up in a house that is right on the LIPA rightaway. Knock on wood, no one in my family has had cancer, nor have any of my neighbors. I am sure that is the main thing people are going to write here as a reason to avoid powerlines. I liked living on the rightaway, it gave us some more privacy, we had neighbors only on our sides. The lines are quite far in the air, so I don't think we felt any affect from them.

Re: Your thoughts on power lines...

My father is a scientist and science professor and there have been studies going on for years and years and years that have no evidence that those power lines have any health effects. HOWEVER, we chose not to purchase a really lovely home near powerlines because we were really worried about resale.

Not worth the health risk, and horrible for resale.

I totally agree. We saw a wonderful, affordable home, but our REA advised us against buying it because of resale due to the power lines. Even if it doesnt bother you, it bothers many people!

Thanks everyone.
We did find a house in the same neighborhood. You can see the powerlines, but they are far away compared to the other house. Is that ok for resale?

Re: Your thoughts on power lines...

I think unless they are in your backyard, it's not THAT much of an eyesore.

I did see a gorgeous house in Miller Place that sat on the market for over a year because it had those huge towers in the backyard. I loved the house but was worried about resale too.

They were creative with the photographs of it on MLS but I saw it on a satellite map.

There's also the possiblity of kids hanging out in that area, I know in Levittown, my brother used to run his dirtbike up and down that whole strip where the lines were.

It would be a no go for me. I would always worry about my family's health and of course down the line resale value.

Depends, can't judge just from the statement.

Overall, no, I don't want to be too close to them and feel they effect resale.

Re: Your thoughts on power lines...

we recently purchased a home that is next to LIPA tower lines in Miller Place. It doesn't bother us at all. We researched the health risks and everything we saw said it was safe. We loved the house, neighborhood and schools - so we weren't going to let that stop us. to each their own. We were worried about the resale at first too, but then realized that the house was on the market (during a slow time) for 3 weeks and they already had 3 other offers on the house! We will probably stay here forever, but if we ever had to move again I don;t think we would have a problem. Just like we fell in love with the house and jumped on it, so will someone else most likely. Good luck!!!

Thanks again to everyone.
As of right now...our accepted offer is on a house that is two or three blocks away from the power lines.

Re: Your thoughts on power lines...

i wouldn't buy one not even for the resale reason....i would be afraid of unknown health issues.....i found a great house--perfect for us, went to visit it and low and behold power lines behind the backyard! i was so disappointed! i then did a lot of research and found that there were not enough studies done to determine whether it was safe or not soooo i said forget it, why take the chance.....i even loved another house and drove around the neighborhood only to find cell phone towers in the back of the backyard---and i again decided against it...

Re: Your thoughts on power lines...

This house is a perfect example of power lines hurting re-sale..I looked at this house back in January it was listed somewhere around $350..It has taken about 3 price adjustments not its down to $296! It is a shame too because the house was really nice granite in kitchen, big den downstairs 2fbath, it def should be worth more than $296. The power lines are directly in the backyard you can even see them from the pic I suspect this is why the house is not selling..The house was even in a magazine!

wow! those suckers are RIGHT behind the house.
This house has been on the market FOREVER..and they haven't come down in price. Powerlines in the back yard almost! and it's 100% updated.
