It was inappropriate. It's basically stereotyping: Dreadlocks=Weed. Someone in one of the post mentioned Bob Marley no secret Bob Marley smoked weed and had dreadlocks so right when Guliana saw the pic or whatever she probably thought Bob Marley since Zendaya had dreads and weed.

It's unfortunate.

Yes. I agree. But that's kind of my point - I think it was just an association thing.

Peanut Butter = Jelly

You know? I don't think that the association had anything to do with race and here's why:

Willie Nelson = Marijuana

Jimmy Buffet = Marijuana

And they are white dudes. KWIM??

Re: Zendaya vs Giulana Rancic

What it boils down to, for me, is that pretty soon none of us will be able to tell a joke, laugh, make a funny, say ANYTHING anymore. And that's just a shame. And I'm very self-deprecating. I'm always poking stereotypical fun at myself. So, I dish it out and I can take it too. There's no malice. Life's too short, we should just lighten up a little.

Maybe we all need a little pot. Chat Icon

Chat Icon everyone needs to lighten up.

I have no idea how what she said was racial.

IMO everyone needs to get over it and move on.

Giuliana will be fired. I thought Kathy said the "and weed" remark. Either way I feel G is not long for the E world.

You know, I just watched it and I thought the same!
It sounded like G said, she looks like she smells like patchouli oil- then someone else said and weed- and G just agreed, yes and weed.

Its ignorant to suggest that dreadlocks are only worn by pot smoking hippies.

There has been a long standing cultural bias against black women expressing themselves through their hair. Imagine you were wearing your hair in a certain way that many of your culture wear it - and you were then accused (by someone outsideof your culture) of being "dirty" and "smelly". Its horrible.

I don't think G should take the fall for this entirely. It's fashion Police FFS! Joan Rivers has said waaaaaaay worse in the past. Plus, Zenaya has graciously accepted G's apology, case closed time to move on.

This whole show is horrible now, they should just cancel it.

THIS is news? The girl has dreads. You wear dreads, you probably wear patchouli. You wear patchouli, chances are you might smoke the funny stuff. But THIS is news? In no way is her comment racist. Trust me...met a lot of WHITE hippies in my life. Patchouli and weed and dreads often go hand in hand. Go to Woodstock...lots of white hippies wearing dreads, smelling like patchouli and weed. So silly.

That's exactly how heard it!! Kathy- the comedienne made the joke, she agreed. People need to lighten up. I agree, absolutely not a racist remark but an association as mentioned above! I cannot understand how people get so easily offended.

I'm not saying they are ONLY worn by pot smoking hippies, I was just saying that a lot of people associate it with that. It's a simple word association. Like how I'm Irish and the moment people look at me, they assume I'm a big beer drinker when, in reality, I've never even tasted beer.

It's just the way it is. Idk if it's right, wrong, or indifferent but it's reality sometimes.

Thank you the above statement is what is being missed and is always missed on threads like this on LIF.

I am not black but have very coarse hair, it was worse when I was younger before years of relaxing it. Anyway, when I was 10 we moved to Queens. I went to school with my hair out, in its afro form with two clips on the side. I remember being so proud to have my hair out. My hair wasn't in my eyes, I wasn't playing with it so it wasn't a distraction in class. However, my teacher made a comment that my hair looked crazy and unruly and I should tie it up.

I remember being so hurt and ashamed. I had never experienced anything like that because up until that point all the schools I attended in Brooklyn were predominantly black. I was the girl with "nice" hair.

I don't think my teacher was racist but I do think she was ignorant to have made such a comment, just like Rancic's comment.

You just bought tears to my eyes. I know exactly what you mean. I have one daughter with coarse hair and one with mixed aka nice hair. People always comment about the youngest with the hair down her back and I can see my oldest who is 14 kinda looking like "Hey, what about me, is my hair not pretty ?". People comment about hair offhandedly without realizing how it affects the other person.

Which is exactly what Zendaya released in her first response to Giulana, that it was hurtful and ignorant. She should have been called out and I'm glad she did.

Chat Icon Awe. I read about this a couple days ago and it brought me back to when I was younger. I know it seems extreme and like its just "hair", but its hard to explain.

My sister also has very nice hair. I remember always thinking why couldn't I get my moms hair. Around your daughters age was when I got over it and started knowing how to style it and embracing the different ways I can wear it. Now I'm the go to person when my nieces want braids or nice hair styles.Chat Icon

That was the media that spun it and started calling her racist and she should be fired.I never said she was racist. From the beginning I said the comment was ignorant and I agree with Zendaya's response. It was eloquently written and she never called her a racist. I agree with Zendaya's reaction, I think she should have been called out as its a very ignorant and offensive comment. That is my only point.

Eta: I don't know what the latter has to do with it. Im speaking from my view point and shared why I agree. It's hard to see it if you can't relate or not even willing to try to see it from another view point.

I'm just wondering if Joan said what would the outcome? I just think Guiliana was trying to be like Joan for a minute but that back fired.

First off I agree with this. I think she was trying to be funny. I dont think what she said was that horrible and if joan said it no one would make a big deal because joan is a comedian. Guillana is not known as a comedian. And joan would have had a better joke lol

As usual.our world is filled with overly sensitive people and the apology was done to make them happy. Im sure she didnt mean for it to turn into the sh*tstorm it turned into. Agan i think she thought she was just being funny

Re: Zendaya vs Giulana Rancic

Here's my 2 pennies.

Joan Rivers was a comedic legend who built a 40 year career roasting people, and fashion was her thing. People expected her to make such ribald comments - but it wasn't coming from a malicious our ignorant place. It was her gimmick to rip people on Fashion Police. And if you don't want to be ripped, don't go on FP.

Giuliana Rancic positions herself as some sort of newscaster or journalist (which I realize is an oxymoron given that she's on E!), so for her to make an off-color remark like that is unexpected. The comment was not racist - it was perpetuating an ignorant stereotype. And I'm glad she got called on it and her apology was sincere.

Kelly Osbourne purposely stirred the pot on this one - she's supposedly a very miserable person on FP and dislikes GR. I read a blind item that she jumped on this bandwagon to publicly shame GR as much as possible.

Case closed Chat Icon Let's all go back to hating on the Kartrashians!
