Girls starting periods

I have a son so I know nothing about having a tween girl, but my boyfriend’s daughter is 10 and he wants to be prepared when she starts her period. He bought pads for her to use and has had a few talks, but is there anything else? Someone recommended period underwear (to use in addition to pads but you have to measure in the crotch area). Are those that helpful?

I would not measure her in the crotch area, and just guess on the size. That would be super uncomfy. I have friends who have bought those, and have had nothing negative to say about them.

My 13 year old hasn't started yet, but we have talked about it. Initially with the American Girl Care and Keeping of your Body book.

10 is still pretty young. Has she already started puberty? My daughter is 9, almost 10 and no where near puberty. I wouldn't buy period underwear until she actually has her period and you can guess her size more accurately. My daughter has some bed wetting issues so I bought them for her. The sizes are not that specific just XS, S, M, L etc. so you can probably guess it.

I have a 13 year old and a 12 year old. One started at 10 another at 11. I agree with the books American Girl Care and Keeping of your Body book. Just talking about it an telling her it's normal is going to help a bit. I did not have much success with the period underwear. I would practice with her on how to put the pad on and basic hygiene of it. Where you want the pads thrown out, how often to change them etc.

I doubt she’s started puberty yet - I think he just wants to be prepared when it happens. And that makes sense about waiting to get the underwear since there’s no telling when she’ll start.

What, no you don’t need to measure her crotch. How mortifying for the child. There are size teen, one, and two pads. They even have variety packs. I would personally do no scent and no tampon for at least six months until she understands her period better. The care and keeping of you books are great. Things to note before a girl will get her period, leg hair, pubic hair, breast buds all develop. From developing breasts, not just the bud to having a period is about 6 months to a year.

I got my period when I was 9 so don't be so sure she's not, it can definitely happen! Everyone is different. I bought my daughter pads (they had a teen box with funky colors lol) and explained what happens.

OMG I hope to God my daughter takes after me- I didn't get my period until almost 17! (I had every test under the sun, they couldn't find anything wrong with me to cause it being so late).
Nothing. Not a hormone imbalance, nothing.
I guess I was just a realllyyyyyyyyy late bloomer.

Actually I don't mean that- I don't want her to have to go through all those tests etc, but if she blooms on the late side, that's fine with me!

I started right before I turned 11. And this was in 1977. No one explained anything to me beforehand. I totally didn't know what was happening.

My daughter is now almost 12 and she hasn't gotten it yet. I am guessing she'll get it some time during the next year. Hopefully it will be even later. But, she at least knows what a period is. I made sure she knew.

But, years ago, even before I got married, I heard somewhere that breast-fed girls get their periods later. I have NO IDEA if that's true or not. But, I always said I would breastfeed (if I could) any daughters I had just for this reason! I breast-fed for 7 months, so hopefully it's working! LOL!

the BEST book for tweens and teens is Our body our Selves. Its in depth, informative and was always a great book.

Has her mother had a conversation with her about her period? This is a mother/daughter thing.

My daughter is 13 and I send her to her dads with supplies. I think its highly inappropriate for you to have a "talk" with her about it, thats her moms job.

Her dad should leave a box of pads in the bathroom for her and let her know that they are there. Or maybe he can call her mom and let her know that he has pads for her at his house so that she does not have to have an uncomfortable conversation with her father.
