NYC schools going half remote

Diblasio announced the reopening plan for NYC schools. Kids will attend school 2-3 days a week and the other days they will do remote learning from home. They are working on a plan for daycare for kids whose parents work full time. I know we have some NYC teachers on this board. I'm wondering how they feel about this.

I saw the headlines. Did they say they will be full days? I listened into the meeting our school district (NJ) had here last night. They will have split schedules, 2 days in school and 3 days at home. The days in school will only be 4 hrs.

Re: NYC schools going half remote

I think it makes perfect sense to move the kids from one building to another building and pretend the second building is a magical covid-free safe space. It also makes sense to believe that a building is covid-free 3 days a week and a hotspot for diseases the other 2 days.

Sounds about right.

I just read the article and it says it will vary by school (which causes difficulties if you have kids in multiple schools).

But is it valid as Cuomo has stated he has the final say?

Moving for childcare? I didn't see anything about moving kids so I am just asking.

What does it accomplish by cutting the school day to 4 hours?

I was referring to the kids that would be placed in a childcare/daycare setting because their parents work and school would be closed half the week. Or whatever this week's ridiculous plan is for September.

Yep. Makes total sense.
Totally legit.
Because the days they are in daycare they won't be exposed right?
Perhaps they can send some teachers to this "magical" daycare and teach the kids there so they get 5 days a week of instruction.

And for the kids that are in the daycare because their parents are working, how will they do their remote learning? In the daycare on laptops? Isn't that, I don't know, like school???

They could start producing hazmat suits in the school colors with the school emblem. That's a definite moneymaker for the districts. Do kids really even need an education anyway? Just close the buildings for good. They could convert them to bingo rooms for old people because God knows seniors aren't staying home. Those mofos are out in full force breaking all the rules.

That's what I was thinking - yup, totally doesn't make sense - to expose them to other children, in other buildings... And it's going to be hard to teach multiple kids at multiple levels in a daycare setting.

The decisions will be made by 8/7 Cuomo just said. All plans need to be submitted by 7/31 and the week following all plans will be reviewed.

It allows for the teachers to dedicate those hours to the kids doing remote learning. It will also allow for them to avoid having a lunch. They don't want kids eating in their classrooms due to food allergies and they can't have all those kids in a cafeteria while trying to socially distance. Also, masks will be required the entire time they are in school.

Let’s not forget the older kids will still be hanging out together even more so with less schooling. What a crock of sh!t this is. Look out for Teen pregnancies and STDs to be on the rise.

I can’t believe how many parents are ok with this.

ETA: I don’t even want to get into what it will do for urban communities and minorities. But who cares about the poor, right?

I am not saying I endorse this plan in any way but... will there be a plan that people would be happy with? For every comment about how this is a ridiculous, magical plan, there is a counter argument that kids need to go back to school, I need my kids to school, I want to teach in a classroom, teachers need to do their jobs, teachers don't want to be put at risk and on and on and on... What IS the right answer? I am not sure one exists so curious what others would do if they were Cuomo or the others making the decisions

I’m hoping If they do this, they need to force employers to allow working from home that can work from home. I’m a hospital employee I have no idea what I would do. DH can do his job 100% remotely but in all honesty he’s attending to work he couldn’t teach the kids and they are having employees return because they couldn’t reach a union agreement to work from home. Makes no sense on how they want people working and kids educated Chat Icon

Not to mention are people now going to have to pay for daycare if they have to work? So many people can’t afford daycare

Is this schedule even doable for homes where both parents work FT?? Which many are! They don’t only have to worry for those days where their kids will be home doing remote learning but now they also have to worry about those days where the kids go to school but just 4 hrs?? Insane!

Did you see, I think it was Florida State University already told their staff that starting in August if you are working from home you can no longer take care of your kids simultaneously. But I think I saw yesterday that the state was mandating that all schools open full time.

Re: NYC schools going half remote

For parents that can't work from home and NEED to work to feed their family, is the state offsetting the cost of daycare the days the child is not in school? Believe it or not, not everybody in NYC or LI is loaded with unlimited funds to be able to pay for both the exorbitant school taxes AND the expensive cost of daycare in this state. So is the state stepping in? Doubtful.

For the teachers that are against opening schools, have they been taking the utmost precautions since March? Staying home, not seeing other people, social distancing, wearing masks, 100% of the time? And the same restrictions for their kids and spouse? If school isn't safe neither is a BBQ with friends where you're not 100% on your covid game.

I don’t think schools should be opening full time in September, but i also have been going overboard with the rules. My kids haven’t seen friends or gone to a store since March, and the only people we see without masks are our parents and siblings. Ive gone into a building a total of 4 times since April 1

For myself, a fully opened school would be what I would be happy with. Extra cleaning at night and let the kids go back to normalcy.
I have no clue what I would have done years ago when I had younger kids in school. Most parents can’t just work from home and don’t have the extra funds for extra care. Who is going to teach the kids for free the days they have to work from home?
