For those who are citing the outbreaks now happening in daycares as reason to limit school or keep them closed. The plan seems to be reducing school hours to only end supplementing more hours children spend in daycare / aftercare programs. So how is this reducing the spread if the kids are still in school or daycare setting after their reduced day of school? If they are getting it now, they will 100% get it in the fall with Flu & strep. Daycare / aftercare is actually worse than having them in school because they are running around like animals with no structure anyway. Also the kids will still have to eat since it will be 12 when they get out?

This just adds to how dumb this plan is and the only thing it’s going to do is hurt the kids and families in poor neighborhoods or those who can’t afford daycare. It’s only screwing over working parents and children at this point.

And aftercare doesn’t stop in 5th grade. I utilized it for my son in 6th and he will be attending whatever they offer in 7th grade. It was a pain in the @ss when he had the random half days with no after care once a month and now they want me to figure it out 2-3 days a week?

I think kids need to go back to go school full time, well my son needs to go back. This has already impacted him severely and it will only be worse. But I already accepted that our government is most likely going to fail my son in the fall. My plan is to figure out what to do by January to make it better for him and my family.

Speaking for myself, I was just sharing something I read. Not trying to convince anyone that schools should stay closed. I hope they open, as does my teacher husband. I just don't see how they're going to open and stay open as much as I want them to.

Yes—Someone asked if kids were getting infected so I mentioned a news article where kids were in fact getting infected.

We can open schools, but if a school/area has an outbreak then the school(s) will get shut down with probably zero notice.

I don’t envy anyone right now in a position of power that has to make these decisions. It’s a no-win situation.

If COVID was running rampant through daycares Cuomo would never have opened camps. It also would have been all over the news.

For every outbreak there are at LEAST two dozen centers that had no outbreak or spread. Those stories just don’t make the news, understandably, because they’re not interesting,

No matter what they decide to do in September, people will not be happy. So let's just wait and see.

I am not saying I endorse this plan in any way but... will there be a plan that people would be happy with? For every comment about how this is a ridiculous, magical plan, there is a counter argument that kids need to go back to school, I need my kids to school, I want to teach in a classroom, teachers need to do their jobs, teachers don't want to be put at risk and on and on and on... What IS the right answer? I am not sure one exists so curious what others would do if they were Cuomo or the others making the decisions

Full time school in September. Period . Kids aren't at risk according to everything I have seen.
Has anyone seen huge amounts of kids getting sick?

If people are scared they can keep their kids home and home school. Enough is enough.
I saw a press conference today from the White House saying how it's imperative the kids go back to school in the Fall

This is the excuse they’re using to justify school closings even though there are zero proved cases of covid that originated in a school setting. The same thing happened last year with the measles, those that wanted to pass the bills to make vaccines mandatory validated their actions by conveniently using the outbreak even though not one case originated in a school, not one! And there were zero deaths due to measles. None of that mattered though and those legislators were still able to continue with their plans and deny the right of an education to thousands of healthy kids. Personally, the same precautions I take with covid are the same precautions I take with the flu but if I were a person to take extra precautions to this specific virus, schools would not be what I’d fear the most.

Exactly, what did happen with that that huge measles outbreakChat Icon Chat Icon Dont hear anyone with it now.

For measles though - there were cases in schools. We live near the epicenter. Many schools were ordered to close or send home children who weren't vaccinated.

Were those cases proved to have been transmitted in school? I was very, very invested in this issue last year and I don’t recall the DOH ever mentioning any cases that originated in a school, well at least public schools. From the DOH not from the news cause we all know how “accurate” they are, often exaggerating numbers and blaming the unvaccinated. I remember calling the DOH to find out what were the number of cases and they were no where near the numbers reported by the news. Regarding children that are not vaccinated being sent home, that has always happened for as long as I can remember. Schools have parents sign a letter about it. This was the protocol followed for a long time without ever being a problem and rarely needed to be followed. I actually don’t know any family (non vaxed/ex vaxed) that have kept their kids home because of an outbreak.

I don't know if they were transmitted in the school but, there were children who had measles. It was a religious school, across the street from a private school, and the private school ordered the unvax kids to stay home for a period time after each positive case.

My question is what about the teachers?
Are the teachers working a full week with just rotating kids coming and going? Or are the teachers also going to do x amount of days in class and x out of class?

Does their exposure not matter?

Thank you.

30% of teachers are over the age of 50. I am sure many under 50 are in high risk groups as well.

I am a teacher and I want to go back. If school opens, my son is going. I hated distance learning from both the teacher and parent standpoint.

With that said, I want to be safe. Full classes do not seem safe. I have 24-32 HS students stuffed into my room. They sit pretty much right on top of each other. The HVAC system is old and doesn’t work properly. I’ve read scientific journals that say around age 10 children can transmit the virus due to a change in their cell receptors. I am praying that if we open, my students are required to wear masks. Why would masks be required in properly ventilated areas but not in schools where no one can properly social distance? I honestly think a hybrid model is the only way to get kids safely back in school.

And yes I understand how frustrating this model will be as I will be working at school and my DH will be working from home.

NYC schools going half remote

This is just preliminary information and things can change pretty quickly - depending on numbers through the rest of the summer. I think the guidelines are to keep our kids safe and as hard as it is for some people, it's understandable. I am pretty sure I am keeping DD home for full time remote learning for the 1st quarter (we can decide quarterly what we want to do). It was really hard for us, but that's just what I feel is safest and I have the option to do that since I can continue to work remotely from home. I have friends who are seriously stressed over this- they are teachers with kids and trying to figure out what to do. All schools will be having meetings (ours already has 3 scheduled for next week to work on logistics) and figure out what works best for their demographics. Not everyone is going to be happy with any situation- if they told me that DD had to come to school full time in September, I don't know what I would feel. I can't see her wearing a mask for 7 hours in a classroom in the heat of september. Sitting in one seat all day. Maybe I will feel differently in December/January...I don't know. Also, there is no afterschool, so I would have to figure that out too.

In my opinion, those who can get classiied as disabled under the ADA will likely do it and ask for remote assignements as reasonable accommodations. Many of those who fear the unknowns of this virus and who have the credentials to get private sector jobs where work from home is an option will act, understandably, in their own best interests, and get other work. They chose a noble profession, stayed the course through being severely underpaid, in many cases, relative to their credentials, and through the fear of school shootings. But to essentially be on the front lines with cases surging in some places? It will be too much for many of them. Lots of the really good ones will be gone. They are not babysitters. When life resumes, we will have reaped what we have sown. And whomever's left will teach children.

My district is having a board meeting this evening, the doctor was just asked how far apart kids need to be and he is saying 6 feet, 3 feet with masks.
They are proposing for k to 5 1/2 day morning, no lunch, time to clean building, and then the other kids come in for the second half of the day five days a week.

For middle and high school 2 days a week, half day for two sets of kids like two sets for elementary. Virtual learning other days.

So what are parents supposed to do with their kids the other half of the day?

.

After care and daycare. Because that's safe. But being in school all day is not.
Or all women can give up their careers to stay home with their children. Like in the 1950s. A woman's place is in the home.
And perhaps then the government can just print more money to help support our lost salaries

Yep that will work. SMH.

And we all have a boatload of money. My full time daycare budget was re-allocated once my kids hit school age... Our district offered daycare for first responders kids but it was still $45 per day... And the day wasn't conducive to any first responders schedule.

A decent system would have ensured that first responders had free daycare. Instead of the way all that money was spent/allocated. Terrible that it wasn't.

This plan only works for the wealthy, people who have the luxury of working from home, have the higher income jobs. This isn't the majority and is only going to hurt many children and families in urban/poor neighborhoods. If you can send them to daycare for 4 hours then you might as well keep them in school for 8. Let parents have the option to keep their kids remote, full time if they have that luxury.

NYC schools going half remote

Our district (they say they heard from some people in the know up at Albany) is telling us now that most likely the governor is going to be saying all back or all remote. That the hybrid models the schools are preparing are all going to be too different and will not be given the same level of education. They are thinking 80% we are going back full time with some guidelines in place.

Then they should have told them that already! They've got all these administrators and committees working daily development these plans just to say no? Tell them that now then and let people work on usable plans. That's insane.

Interesting! Did the kids from the private school have interactions with the kids from the religious school? If not, I wonder what made them take such drastic decision considering the kid (s) with measles did not go to the private school.

If religious exemptions were not eliminated, yes I would have send them (reason why we’re moving to another state in a few yrs). But if they needed to wear masks 6, 7 hrs a day, I doubt I’d be ok with them going to school. I know how kids (specially little kids) are with masks and for me having my kids wearing masks for that long and constantly touching their faces with dirty hands, it’s just a recipe for disaster. I can’t even imagine how dirty those masks will be at the end of a school day, and to think they’ll be constantly breathing all that in? Nope.

I get what you are saying. I think the issue is the NYC BOE is huge and trying to make this decision to accommodate every single parent is impossible. I agree that a lot of parents on here probably don’t have kids that attend school in NYC. I live in NJ but the same issues are happening here. There are overcrowding in the public schools, a lot of people who can’t work from home or are small business owners. I’m also from NYC and all my family is still living in Queens. Therefore, I know how horrible this set up will be for many in NYC.

I also think masks for 7hrs is unrealistic and not great. In my sons school survey I explicitly said that I will send my son to school with one, will threaten him to wear it but I can’t be liable for the touching, losing and whatever else happens when he’s at school.

As someone who went to the bad NYC schools with over crowding in the poor neighborhoods, it really upsets me because I know what this will do. It’s makes me sad and I hope people are thinking about these districts. Same goes for NJ urban districts like Jersey City.

ETA: I also think they need to stop thinking about every parent and people’s feelings. Look at the population as a whole, the risks that are involved in each model, how realistic these schedules are and out weigh base on those for NYC. But to say overcrowded NYC schools can just go to this hybrid model seems like they aren’t thinking of all that is needed for this. The impact it will have on children and parents.

NYC schools going half remote

The district I work in just sent out three options they are planning on sending to the state: Modified In-Person Instruction, Hybrid/Blended Model, Online Learning

If you want to know more about your district’s plans, I suggest virtually attending the BOE meetings. My home district is having 2-3 virtual meetings that I will be “attending”.

They are thinking 80% we are going back full time with some guidelines in place.

Then they should have told them that already! They've got all these administrators and committees working daily development these plans just to say no? Tell them that now then and let people work on usable plans. That's insane.

The plans the districts are working on would need to be done regardless of if in person school starts in the fall. At any time, we could be out again and all districts need to be ready for that as well.

I mean the hybrid models. These are logistical nightmares and if they're not going to be allowed to happen, that should be made clear now bc the planning surrounding those is sucking up a ton of resources right now.

They did in NYC. They opened REC centers. My son was able to get into one because his father is a first responder

However, no child or teacher or staff at the REC centers contracted COVID. Which I find interesting

I think having these plans in place are a good thing in case things get bad again. What took place during remote “learning” was a joke and unacceptable. If schools are now ready with actual plans the kids will actually be able to LEARN if we suddenly have to close again.

Plus, there are kids who can’t go back to school due to underlying issues. Kids who test positive and have to stay out of school for a couple weeks to quarantine, they will have access to the material.

My kids have missed entire weeks due to sickness in the past and fell behind. It would be nice to be able to have them work from home and not fall as far behind.
