NYC shootings

“ The 53 people shot in New York City between Friday and Monday included a 1-year-old boy who was killed on Sunday ”

Article

I’m failing to see where the outrage and protests are about this. Diblasio claims this is all due to people being locked down in quarantine... does anyone believe this? Can we stop with the defund the police movement now or does it have to get worse?

Re: NYC shootings

DH's friend who is still a cop in that area posted the front page of the Post with headline of the 1 year old baby being shot on his Facebook and said this....

This is just some headline , let me tell you what it’s like holding a infant that’s about to die , it’s profoundly soul crushing . It carves out a chunk of you that always sits deep inside and will never go away . Desperation takes over flooding your body with helplessness .Then facing a parent with life changing news you failed . And these are just words the reality is more painful than one could imagine . Whatever side you lean just remember these “headlines” are souls lost and the impact they have as you change the channel or flip a page

The police haven't been defunded yet have they?

I think this has a lot to do with prisoners being released due to Covid and bail reform.

And they disbanded the Anti Crime units, so that may be adding to it as well, but who knows

If you think there should be a protest over this then start one!

Protests happen because someone is passionate enough to start one.

Media will pick up on things if you get enough of a following for it!

Also the protests against police brutality have no bearing on people killing each other! is it wrong yes but it doesn't excuse the fact the SOME police are bad cops and use excessive force.

With all that said ,do i think each side is taking things to extreme? yes!!

We clearly need a police force but may be some things do need to change within the force.

I would like to know why there is an uptick in violence. Are cops choosing to not do there jobs to proof a point? Not saying that's the case but if it is that clearly is wrong.

The article says the police commissioner said there might be an up ticket because of the following:
new regulations on the police — including a ban on chokeholds — as possible factors.

really so because a cop cant do chokeholds they can't do their jobs??

Example of the other side taking it to extreme.

Just like for any person who really thinks there should be no cops is taking things to extreme!

also i do know the article says they released people from prison, which also doesn't help esp. if they are violent offenders

NYC shootings

The movement to defund (which we all know doesn't mean abolish) the police, aims to bring more resources into communities that experience gun violence as a way to reduce that violence. I fail to see how that is turning a blind eye to this child's death.

I’m confused on how you think racist cops who murder people on the streets and are protected will help solve this problem?

That is what black lives matter and defund police want to address. Preventing brutality and properly providing support to nonviolent situations that need social workers, mental health workers, etc not armed, untrained cops.

If you are outraged then go protest. Another thing the BLM movement is trying to do is protect our right to peaceful protest.

Your post is divisive and unnecessary.

there was a protest - actually a support for the police and a protest to not defund and to bring anti-crime back today. It was organized and led by the leaders of the black communities in Brooklyn and the Bronx. I saw them on TV yesterday or the day before talking about how ALL BLACK LIVES MATTER, even those not killed by "Racist" police. They are calling for the community and the police to work together but they are asking for the anti-crime unit to be put back together ASAP. They actually understand how this can get better. Are they racist and divisive because they believe all black lives matter? Are they racist and divisive because they care about all lives in their community?? Are they racist and divisive because they think it is wrong to kill a baby in a stroller???

there are plenty of racist cops why is that ignorant and pathetic - racist cops kill Black people and are unnecessarily violent towards Black people and Black communities and they need to be defunded to keep money and resources in their own communities instead of taking away and hoarding wealth and resources in white areas

Making a blanket statement "Racist cops" is wrong!! I'm sure there are some racist cops - absolutely and there needs to be some kind of reform. No body denies that. But you make it sound like it is mostly racist and that simply is not true. And this is not the first time I have seen that on these boards. If the black leaders of these communities don't want the police defunded then who are any of these people to say that. They want to sit down and work with the police to get things to a better place - not defund them. They literally said loud and proud ALL BLACK LIVES MATTER. If they said that on here they would be called racist. I think they know their communities and the needs of their communities way better than anyone on these boards

And I think it was wrong to try to make the OP feel badly for having a heart and caring about the baby and the others that are being killed. That was rude and uncalled for. She has the right to feel how she wants and to ask what the hell is going on without being attacked for it

This was actually a stop the violence protest not a support and not defund the police march. They believe the police Dept has issues. The March was about gun violence.

The police haven't been defunded yet have they?

I think this has a lot to do with prisoners being released due to Covid and bail reform.

And they disbanded the Anti Crime units, so that may be adding to it as well, but who knows

All this, plus summer, less trials due to COVID, low morale/ standing down amongst NYPD are making things worse.

Who thought that bail reform would be a good idea? Or early release of prisoners? Or disbanding of anti-crime units? Or, yes, banning of chokeholds? How else can police subdue (without guns)? How can police do their jobs without support of local politicians? How far down the abyss do we need to go? It's scary.

On bail reform: People are outraged by bail reform but prior to it being implemented, a person who was believed to have committed a crime could afford the bail and head home to his family, and then wait for his court appointment in the comfort of his home. A person who didn't have money to post bail would sit in jail until his court appearance. The core of bail reform allows both to head home, not just the wealthier person.

It doesn't seem that anyone was outraged before that people who had money were allowed to post bail and sleep in their beds that evening. Why is it such an issue now and not before?

They have gotten rid of certain units. For example, there are no more cops in plain clothes. So these thugs are no longer afraid of the possibility of cops being in their presence without their knowledge. It’s simple now, if you don’t see a cop in uniform there are no cops around so you can do what you want. It’s disgusting what they turned the NYPD into. You couldn’t pay me to go near the city.

Ok see why would they take away plain clothes cops?
I need to understand if there was a good reason for this before I can give my full opinion but I don’t see why this would be need and how that helps solve the issues within the department.
But I don’t know reasoning so maybe it will.
