Re: Shipping bagels
I have never shipped bagels. I did look into it because I wanted to send some to my friends in AZ.
I have used the site goldbelly for other items and they are great and everything on time and cakes have always been perfect.
They do have bagels on the site and you can look for ones that offer free shipping. I know it is kind of expensive at first...
But if you were going to fed-ex them and want them to be fresh, I would think it might be about the same price.
Plus you don't have to run to different places.

Re: Shipping bagels
i've received baked goods since i moved out west, from friends.
it's not cheap.
they have sent them over night and they were wrapped well in plastic.
except for some home-made cookies, everything has always arrived in pretty good shape and yummy. sadly, it's been a little while and i don't remember the specifics, though.

Re: Shipping bagels
I’ve never shipped bagels before but I know a bagel store in Nj that ships all over. The bagel nook in freehold.
So I would imagine other shops may offer this as well. Worth a shot to ask you local place if you are looking to do that

Shipping bagels
I moved to Nashville two years ago and my parents would ship me bagels a few times a year before Covid started. They are in Brooklyn and my kids love the rainbow bagels they used to bring over. They were usually sending other gifts so they just tightly sealed the paper bag they came in then in a plastic bag and then in the box with the other items. They got them fresh made first thing in the morning and straight to the post office second day mail. So if they sent them on Tuesday morning, we had them on Thursday. We would have a couple and freeze the rest. I miss my bagels, but we started making out own.

Re: Shipping bagels
You can buy the bagels at any bagel store and ship them yourself.
Just wrap them tightly with plastic wrap and seal again in a plastic or paper bag and ship yourself from the PO.
Bagels freeze very well. So even if they aren't so fresh when they get them, they can freeze them. And defrost and toast to perfection.

Re: Shipping bagels
My mom brings them over for me. She puts them in Ziplocs and I put them straight in the freezer. Works perfect.

Shipping bagels
God, I love bagels. DH used to bring a dozen home every Friday night from some great place - but I forget the name. I had to make him stop because my waistline was expanding and expanding - but I miss them.

That's funny. I live really close to that bagel store. Not close enough to go for quick bagels. Maybe about 10 mins away or less, but stop there on the way to Great Adventure and eat in the parking lot. LOL

Re: Shipping bagels
So here is my thing about bagels. I don't think they are the same once frozen and defrosted and definitely not the same toasted.
To ME, the thrill of a NY bagel is getting it fresh from the bagel store and eating it right then. When it's chewy and soft and fresh and not toasted and hard.
Once I freeze them, I have to toast them because it's not the same and even the best bagels are no better than a Lender's bagel to me once toasted.
But I'm a bagel purist.

Re: Shipping bagels
Way back in the beginning of this nightmare, I ordered bagels from Goldbelly for DH's birthday (poor thing had it back in the beginning of April). They. were. DELICIOUS. And they lasted us FOREVER. They came individually wrapped (I think... don't quote me on that), so we froze them, and we would take them out the day before we planned on eating them. They always tasted fresh, even weeks later. I totally recommend them.

I want to send to my sister who lives OOS and doesn't get back to the area often. That's the only reason why I would even think of sending. She used to freeze them all the time when she lived a little closer.

Re: Shipping bagels
Go to the bagel store when it first opens. Bring extra large zip lock bags. Keep bagels in their paper bag, then seal in a plastic bag with a knot. Then seal in a zip lock bag. Bring all of that in a box directly to the post office and pay for next day air.

What is the deal with the paper bag? if there is excess moisture from being freshly made, the paper absorbs it. They just taste better when kept in paper then double bagged.
