The district that my kids would have gone to it’s doing hybrid and as for right now the kids won’t have to wear masks when they’re sitting but they’ll have to put it on if they need to walk somewhere. If my kids would have gone to school and the school requires them to wear masks all day, I’d have pulled them. I just don’t see little ones being able to wear them 6, 7 hrs! If I have trouble wearing masks, I can’t even imagine how much more a little kid would! Plus we all know how not careful kids are, they love to touch everything, their hands are full of germs, etc. Adding to this all the other viruses that usually go around during winter time like cold, flu, stomach bug, those masks will be trapping all of these microorganisms increasing the chances for kids to get sick. Chat Icon

I think it is the other way. The masks plus frequent hand washing will decrease transmission of those viruses. I may be wrong but I believe anything airborne gets trapped on the outer layer so it doesn’t get into your respiratory track.

What about kids touching a contaminated surface, removing the mask and putting it back on again with contaminated hands? Adjusting the mask wtith contaminated hands. There are strict guidelines for medical professionals using PPE. It is crazy to think little kids can follow them

See that's the thing I find myself touching my mask incorrectly while putting it on and off etc
You really can't expect kids to follow the correct protocols for PPE wearing.

I can see it happening with n95s but not with masks that usually ppl wear, and tbh how often will kids be handwashing their hands, and how much will the teacher be continuously enforcing this with 20+ little kids when they have already so much to do during a school day? I hope I’m wrong though, and the number of kids that usually get sick during the cold months reduce significantly.

We shall see because my daughter hasn't been sick with flu, a stomach bug or anything in about 5 years. So if she starts coming down with stuff this year, I'll know it's because she's touching her face more or misusing the mask!

Re: Kids Wearing Masks all Day?

Our district is not requiring masks all day. That's the reason DH is refusing to send DC to school. I spent all summer trying to wear him down and convince him how important it was for our kid to be around other kids and then our super said in no uncertain terms that without a mandate from the governor she will not require masks to be worn all day.

As a result, we are full virtual until December.

I agree kids won’t do it perfectly but the rules are to mitigate the risk not eliminate it. I still feel like while not perfect mask wearing will help.

If I do I am looking forward to him maybe not getting the flu this year unlike the last two years thanks to the masks and hand washing.

Summer camps were reporting a LOT fewer normal summer illnesses that they attribute to the mask wearing/hand washing etc.

I am sure there will be procedures in place for removing masks such as using hand sanitizer before taking it on and off. I also think kids won’t be touching many surfaces except for their own desks. No supplies are going to be shared unless properly sanitized. Schools are required to have extra masks for all students in case one becomes soiled.

Were kids wearing masks at camps? I thought only staff was suppose to, not kids.

The camp I looked into for DD was no masks- only the staff.
They are all different though I guess.

Same. I inquired with a few cause I was contemplating to sign up both of my DSs and all the ones I called said the same, masks were required only for staff.

Kids Wearing Masks all Day?

Masks should be required all day regardless of social distancing and then they can revisit it once school is open a few months. The kids will be fine. It's the adults that are causing the issues. Kids will see all their friends and teachers doing the same thing and it will not be an issue after a week or two.

I wouldn't be thrilled with the masks all day. If we go that route, we are going to do the virtual program and try to hire help. It's just not the environment I want for my young child. If my kid was older, I'd make them suck it up and bare it but my little guy is only 5, entering K, and it just "doesn't feel right" to me.

Our camp did not require masks for the children. Also daycares and nursery schools by us are not requiring masks for the children as of now.

My district is requiring them at all times. They’re only doing half day in person so there is no food allowed and therefore no reason to take off the mask.

I agree with this. As long as kids aren't hearing, at home, that their parents don't think they should be wearing masks, it will become second nature for them - much more easily than for adults

I'm positive as can be. I don't say a word in front of her. I play it up in fact, that at least you can go back to school now! Let's look online for some cool new masks since you'll need more for school.
But she still tells me she can't breathe and pulls it down to get air.
Fact of the matter is it IS uncomfortable to breathe in. I had a near panic attack in Target again the other day and was sneaking air in a quiet aisle to avoid it going full blown so I could make it out of the store.
All the positivity in the world won't change the fact that breathing through cloth all day is not natural or comfortable.

It's also really hot in the classrooms at the beginning of September - there are only a few in our school that have AC. I don't think it will be as bad once the weather gets cooler but, in the beginning, it's going to be tough.

But my kids only go 2x a week so I think they can handle it.

Different masks make all the difference. You need to find own that feels good to you. My oldest is autistic, has sensory issues, OCD off the charts and anxiety so if she can wear a mask all day (she wore one for 4 hours for camp this summer with no breaks) then I really do not think there is any excuse unless you have a severe disability (like my younger daughter) or a medical condition. It's all about desensitizing the mask and not making it an issue.

As a side note, I am shocked that any district on LI does not have air conditioning in their schools. We had air conditioning back in the 80s when I was in HS. Get on your BOE and put in a capital building expenditure.

Our districted noted they will not open school if the temperature reaches above a certain point in the classrooms. Maybe 85. I don't remember the specifics but that was a good measure...Also, someone was on the district's zoom was talking about how AC usage is not advised because it refilters the air in the class and disburses droplets. I didn't fact check that, but another concern to add to the list. Chat Icon

IDK. It's anecdotal reporting anyway. Not any actual studies. Newsday has been having online forums discussing the issues that have included camp directors, school administrators, and doctors - the camp directors that have participated reported that they have seen less illness than a normal summer and attribute it to the mask wearing/hand washing etc.

Hopefully nothing is contaminated since kids will be required to sanitize when walking in and are not allowed to share things at all. Our district has chrome books for each student so there will be no shared books etc. And let's remember that even though they heavily emphasize mask wearing, clean hands are just as, if not more important. The viral load has to be pretty heavy to infect someone in a room the size of a classroom, and then that viral load would have to enter your mucous membranes in the precise amount. It's verrrryyyyy easy to touch your eyes with contaminated hands and get sick. Easier than droplets in the air.

Not on LI anymore but, have been talking to the district. We didn't have AC though at school in the 90s on LI and they aren't allowing fans. That is my concern - if it's really warm and they have to wear masks - it will be miserable. At the Communion this weekend, when the AC wasn't on, it was warm and masks were being pulled down everywhere (the parents were worse than the kids but, still).
