PET scan
I originally posted in my GERD thread, but it's since morphed to something else. I assume GERD is just a side effect of something bigger happening. I'm having a PET scan tomorrow, along with various other appointments with lung specialists. I'm glad they're not doing a biopsy on just the mass since the PET scan will look at other areas around the chest.
I'm really hoping they figure it out because symptoms seem to change every few days. Some days I feel fine, and others I feel rotten and I'm swimmy headed. The discomfort in my chest comes and goes - I can go days without issues and then one night I'll have a lot of discomfort. Saturday was the first day that I was winded just by cleaning up the playroom. I'm telling myself that the mass has just grown b/c of hormones related to perimenopause and it'll be easy peasy to remove. Send good thoughts that it's not something really bad.

Re: PET scan
Oh my!
I’m kinda surprised they are sending you for a PET scan without other testing pointing to needing it.
I’ll keep you in my thoughts

Well - it’s not good. The PET scan showed that the thymoma has a very high likelihood that it’s cancer. :( They’ll schedule me soon for a biopsy to verify. I’m so scared - I don’t even know how to process it.

Thanks! This is really weird. It's hard to process while still going on with regular life.

Got preliminary update from the biopsy - it’s not a thymoma, it’s actually non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Seems like it hasn’t spread past the thymus gland but I’ll have to start chemo soon. Will be meeting with the oncologist next week to find out the full plan.

I'm so sorry to hear this, hearing cancer is devestating -- and I'm wishing you the best. Chemo, though scary, wasnt as bad as I thought it would be -- not everybody is the same, so I cant say of course how you'll react, but know that it is possible to get through it relatively unscathed....I'm not sure where you are located or where you are planning on being seen, but I had chemo at Monter Cancer center (northwell) and was very happy there. The facility is great, everything is integrated so all my drs see it all and my oncologist is great (he sees breast cancer patients maybe only? -- he did his fellowship at MSK and trained well etc.....I think many of them are) -- and the other staff members could not have been nicer --

Thanks! My dad had a lymphoma in his neck and he said the chemo wasn’t so bad for him. The radiation is what was more difficult.
I’ll be going to Duke Hospital. They have an awesome cancer center so I know I’m in good hands.

Sending you prayers and good wishes for a complete recovery. I hope the treatment is not too bad for you. You are in the very best of hands at Duke.

Thanks! I finally talked to the oncologist yesterday and treatment is going to be brutal. 5 days in the hospital overnight to get constant chemo, then 2 weeks home. Then 5 days in the hospital, etc - for a total of 6 times in the hospital. Apparently it’s common for my type of lymphoma and it usually responds really well.
Thankfully my ex and I are amicable so he’s willing to do whatever is needed to cover my time with our son if I’m not feeling well.
On the plus side, I don’t have to cook meals for those 5 days. :D

Oh and the other good thing is that there won’t be any surgery or radiation.

Duke is fantastic. I'm sorry to hear about your diagnosis, but you are right- outcomes for non-hodgkin lymphoma are excellent. Best of luck to you!
