Republicans, Independents

Taking a break from Trump stuff for now..

For those who identify as a Republican, lean right, or are independent, who do you think you’d like to see as a party leader in the future? Do you think people like Ted Cruz are the future? Where do you think your party is headed - with someone like Trump or will it be rebuilt for someone more traditional, like Kasich?

I just saw Matt Gaetz being interviewed. He’s young and loves Trump and says it’s now his party. What do you think?

Real question since we are all being respectful now - why does it seem like republicans (this post is an example) always focus on the person and not the issues?

This is one reason the left will say Trump is a cult leader. And anyone like Trump is just replacing the cult leader. It’s about the person not the policies.

What even are the Republican policies? Other than supporting Trump, what does Matt Gaetz even believe?

I’m responding because I was an independent but registered Democrat only after Trump came to office. I don’t know what I identify now as but I like to question and don’t intend to blindly follow any one person or ideal alone.

For example, I am concerned about our national deficit which was historically a Republican belief. Does the party even care anymore? Which Republican believes in overturning the disastrous tax plan that Trump created that drove up our debt?

I have no idea what Trumps platform is other than hating democrats. So it will be hard for anyone to have a respectful conversation about candidates “like Trump” unless there is an actual platform to debate.

Gaetz and Cruz are just another (slightly less frightening) version of Trump. I feel like both have lost any sense of reality or moral compass, not that they had much to begin with. They bought into all of Trump's rhetoric and conspiracies and as such, I cannot remotely see them as the future of the party. We need to end Trumpism, not encourage more of it.

If the Republican party was smart, they would take these next couple of years to put as much distance between themselves and anyone or anything relating to Trump. He has destroyed their party, in his 4 year reign of terror he has cost them the House, the Senate and the presidency. Hardcore Trumpers have no place in the the Republican party anymore, not if they ever want to redeem their party. They need to work on their platform, their image and use this time to show the American public that they stand for something better than Trump. They are such a mess right now and looking to Gaetz or Cruz would be an epic mistake on their part.

The republican party must distance themselves from Trump and the trump enablers. But Trump won himself a strong base, while Kasich and the more rational, moderate Republicans gained very little traction. I hope it goes back there. Unfortunately, the republican party was always making a slow and steady pace towards their concerns and issues being about white supremacy and anti-anyone but white male power. and tax breaks and pro-corporations to basically enable the rich white men at the top to keep their money and power for themselves. And after a couple of decades of climbing the ladder - they reached the top and it all came to what is now essentially a Nazi Regime but instead of Hitler and Nazi troops we have Trump and Trump enablers. For whoever said the deficit was a concern, Democrats have been proven to help reduce deficits more than the Republicans who usually put us into more debt.
