My kids school taught that in fifth grade. But we just had a conversation sparked by a 400 response thread on my town Facebook group about the future of sex Ed in my state. There is legislation proposed for NJ to begin discussing trans, condoms, consent, in kindergarten. I think that is way too young to talk about condoms at that age. Fifth grade includes the fact that boobs hurt before periods. You should have seen the outrage some parents had over the curriculum changes.

My town's FB page is the worst. Too much drama. I get some stuff, but others... OMG! Worst are the people who don't even have kids in the school adding fuel to the fire.

I am on the board of my town Facebook group mods. We try to keep things civil. We also have rules who can join. You have to live in town, provide your address, provide the name of your children in the school they attend, and get nominated by an existing member. We are a closed and secret group.

Re: Immature 6th grader

He sounds awesome!

As long as he has friends, gets good grades, and is kind he's in a great place.

Mine is in 5th and I sort of wish he'd watch Loud House again sometimes lol. He's all video games and sports.

This is an awkward age for both genders but I think esp boys.

I taught middle school for one semester before I got moved to the high school and... there are no words. I loved all of them but OMG to say they are a handful is an understatement. My hat is off to anyone who does that regularly.

My point is that they are all over the place and tomorrow he could be totally different.

And I keep waiting for DH to have "the talk" with DS because he says he is going to but he hasn't yet. DS knows what sex is but the other side stories need to be told soon and he expressed that he doesn't want to know. If DH doesn't do it soon I will have to. Maybe in the car. So anyway you're not alone!

Ok, thanks all!!

Yes.. has a lot of friends and some are def more mature than him and his best friend is just as silly.

He's doing great in school and his teachers love him.

I just keep telling him to try and be the example being the older brother where he goes down to his brother's level... and not being in school doesn't help either. LOL
Hasn't fully experienced middle school yet.

Plus he's on the short side, which doesn't effect him, but he does get a lot of people thinking he's younger than he is.

He’s the oldest? I definitely find in most cases the older child matures slower and the kids who are overly mature tend to have older siblings.

Yes! But funny thing is his group of "boys" he hangs with most all have older siblings. He's the only one who has a younger one.

See- I think it's just the opposite. The oldest is the pioneer-the first baby--stays innocent longer--has less to jade/educate him and more of the parents' uncertainty and unsteadiness moving forward. By the time you get to the baby of the family, they're usually precocious beyond words and raising themselves. (JK--but you know what I mean). The oldest ones get to have that more delayed loss of innocence.

I really think it depends on the kid. I was the oldest, very independent from a young age and very sure of myself. I definitely matured faster than my younger sibs. My DD, who is my oldest, is far more innocent and immature than I was at the same age. She also has a completely different personality than me which I believe is a contributing factor. I think it's more the individual kid rather than just their place in the family.

OP, I wouldn't worry. Kids will mature in their own time. Chat Icon
