Identity theft
Someone applied for unemployment under my name and SSN to my current employer. They of course flagged it.
I’ve checked my credit and everything was already frozen. I did a proactive fraud alert with the 3 agencies.
I’m running a virus scan on my home computer.
Anything else I can do to protect myself?

Re: Identity theft
Life lock
It’s the only thing that helped with DH. He had his identity stolen a few years ago. Locked his credit, police reports all of it and they still kept opening accounts in his name. Plane tickets, phones, dinners out etc.
Since life lock, there have been attempts but nothing goes through. He is alerted immediately if something fishy comes up. Worth the $

Thanks. I will check it out.
The thought of someone booking even a dinner in my name is infuriating. The nerve of some people. Argh.

The same exact thing happened to my husband about 3 months ago. His company flagged it too. We have a bunch of identity theft services already and nothing else was compromised.
Last week, I just got forms for unemployment for myself stating I requested them but I don't qualify. I haven't worked in 14 years so I don't know where that information came from. Lots of scammers out there trying to take advantage of people being out of work because of Covid I think!

Identity theft
Same thing happened to me in April - actually happened to almost everyone in my workplace. I went through the checklist provided by the state (or federal government - I don’t remember which one).

Re: Identity theft
This happened to me as well in the fall (I work for a very large company - 200K+). Also, my husband is in HR and this is happening a lot for people at his company (his company has about 5,000 people).
I followed the guidelines here:
https://identitytheft.gov/
My company also suggested I report it to the local police. They advised though, if nothing is actually stolen, there was no reason to create a report.

Identity theft
Wow! This must be common. My co-worker was just notified by HR that someone applied for unemployment under her name. This is awful!

Yes, my husband's was stolen and he was told to notify the police.
The way we found out was when we filed our taxes, they used his social security number and collected about $8000 from the govt. Yes, you read that right.
We always owe a quite a bit of money.
You would think the irs would have some type of system in place to say "Wait a minute this person usually owes us a huge amount of money and now they are getting back and it is being sent to a place in Brooklyn out of the blue"
It is just crazy that there is not a program out there that cross references anything between w2's and where they are sending out your refund.

This was more so in the beginning.

Re: Identity theft
yikes... so many of you! so far, i've been lucky... from strangers. sadly, in my life, it was a family member who took my identity (and my son's) to get credit cards and file income tax returns - for the earned income credit.
i only speak to this relative to find out how her mother is doing.

My boss got a debit card in the mail in his name that he did not apply for. When he called the bank they said it was for his unemployment benefits in Colorado! He was like- what??? Someone applied for unemployment in his name in a state he never lived or worked in. Crazy how easy it must be to scam the system.

Identity theft
I just found out that this happened to several people in my company in the past few weeks. What the heck? What is being leaked and how can I prevent it? Even a service like Lifelock wouldn't be able to catch unemployment fraud as it is not taking out credit. This worries me.

What worries me is how easy it is to get unemployment fraudulently. What kind of system do they have to prove your identity if this is happening so frequently? And doesn't your employer have to verify you were laid off ? So how is this happening? Disturbing.

The HR Dept at my job is catching them and notifying the employee and unemployment.
I wonder if it has to do with covid and how many people are unemployment now and how many business have gone under.

it is COVID. it's crazy here, in california. so many fraudulent claims AND real claims being denied because the crooks got there first OR innocent people finding themselves in hot water because of the fraudulent claims. such a cluster!!
