spinoff to baby shower post

I know many people feel like we are finally seeing the light at the end of the COVID tunnel. I feel the same way, to a certain extent. But I am worried.
Is anyone else scared that all these variants, especially the one found in NYC last week, will undo all of our hard work and progress?
I have nightmares that even though record numbers of people are getting vaccinated and our hospitalizations are rapidly declining, this is a calm before the storm, and this April will be just as horrific as last April.
I go back and forth between telling myself we need to hang out for just another couple of months and then we will finally be on the other side, and telling myself this whole thing is about to start up again full force and we are in for another 12 months of hell so I should just F it and start doing stuff.
I HATE this virus more now than I did a year ago. So done.

Keep your eye on the prize and that’s total number of new cases, 7 day average. There have likely been variants since day 1 but it doesn’t really matter which one is “dominant” unless evidence emerges that it can solidly beat vaccines and/or is reinfecting masses of people who’ve already been sick. And if that happens, it will start where it did this time last year: nursing homes and hospital workers. I have loved ones in both settings and feel confident that the virus is going to remain under control for people who follow very basic common sense of masks, distance, vax as soon as you’re eligible and don’t do anything stupid indoors with people who never took this virus seriously.

Yes I worry that the vax is a false sense of security but, on the other hand, I do have a lot of hope. The numbers are so much better. If the virus continues to mutate, which it will, I just hope that the vaccine will continue to be able to minimize the symptoms if it can't defeat the viral infection entirely.

I think people need to turn off their TVs as the media is loving the ones that are following them like sheep and still hiding in their houses.

No I’m not worried because honestly at this point I’m determined this is never going to end and I just have to live my life.

It’s always something new. New rules vaccines are supposed to be the answer ans I don’t believe even that will make this end because I am sure they will come up with something new.
But I’m probably not a person to listen to right now cause I’m in my I don’t care anymore about any of this and the dumb rules that make no sense stage so why care anymore mood!

I agree. Time to accept that it's never going to go away. Unless the entire world shuts down for good once we open back up cases are going to keep popping up. I don't see us getting herd immunity with this because the hysteria created around it has driven people to go to such extremes already.

I think that it just going to be like flu where it goes around every year and there are different strains and a new vaccine each year. I think as we live with it longer it will weaken and as more research is done vaccines will get better. At least that is my hope. I cant handle much more of this

ITA and I still think the strain of coronavirus we normally get is in the tests too. Now they know how to handle it better so deaths will go down and people can be treated faster.

I'm actually very optimistic. More and more people I've spoken to (especially the elderly) have gotten and are getting the vaccine. Even with the variants, I think that exposure (either with COVID itself or the vaccine) should confer a baseline immunity so much so that it should not be as deadly as it has been.

Each year there will likely be boosters depending on which vaccine you received. mRNA vaccines are so much easier to produce and I believe will be the vaccine of choice in the future (they are even researching mRNA cancer vaccines).

But to get back to the point, while coronavirus will always be with us, it will no longer be novel and we will no longer be as susceptible.

Many people will get the vaccine, especially those that are elderly and immunocompromised. People who do not fall into those categories will get the vaccine especially if they normally get a flu shot every year. Then the outliers who don’t get a flu shot every year may or may not get the vaccine. I do think mass transit and other places that are tough to social distance in will have people wearing masks especially during cold flu and now Covid season. The way education has been handled through this has been a disgrace. If a parent chooses to decide to keep their child remote in September they better have a medical reason with documentation. Schools that are hybrid better get it together for kids to be in school 5 days a week. Schools may require mask wearing too if that will get them in everyday. Schools also need to stop quarantining classes or the whole building every other week.

I think most people are where you are. The progress we are making seems too good to be true after so long. We are getting there, and while now is not the time for complacency, with the Brazilian variant, etc., I believe it is a time for hope.

I do feel like by summer, life will begin to resemble the old normal again. It’s a mix of being outdoors and more people getting vaccinated. Plus as time goes on and we learn more and more about covid, there will be better treatments available if you are to get it. Already it’s not an automatic death sentence like it was last year. Still people dying everyday from it but there is definitely a light at the end of this horrid tunnel.

And yes , I agree it isn’t going anywhere. It will be a yearly vaccine like the flu going forward. Hopefully they have a tamiflu type of treatment for it as well to help them those who don’t want to be vaccinated.

We’re almost there

And it wasn't an automatic death sentence last year either to be honest.
Automatic death sentence is closer to something like Ebola ...

Nope but the media made it out to be. The problem was they didn’t know how to deal with it and put people on ventilators that basically killed them.
It seems what they give you is the same thing you are prescribed when you have a virus (hence the name coronavirus).
If people would start taking care of themselves and more than washing your hands, they would be able to kick these illnesses faster.

You’re right. It wasn’t. But when you are close with those in the medical community and they are in tears every day because they cannot believe the amount of death they are surrounded by. Hospitals to over full capacity. Trucks with bodies in the parking lot. It sure seems like it was.
Based on that alone, from last year to this. They have learned a hell of a lot since then and treatments are available that weren’t last year

ITA with you. For the first time in basically a year, I am hopeful that we are at the end of this nightmare.

Aside from the vaccine, the key to getting back to normal will be for people to continue with the necessary restrictions until we're at a point where when we ditch the social distancing and masks we won't need to go back.

Looking forward to a WAY better summer than last year! Chat Icon

One of the most frustrating things, is that every district is different, even adjacent ones. In Connetquot, we never needed a medical reason for full virtual. We have a small number of cases every day, and we've never had a school shut down. We're planning on going full time this month.

Why should a parent need to prove a medical reason with documentation if they choose to keep a child in a remote setting?

Our school didn’t require it either. It was your choice remote or hybrid or in school.

In certain homes/communities parents opted their kids into remote learning. Many of those students are home doing nothing. Teachers are teaching them and the kids are not participating or doing work. The teachers are in constant contact with these parents and nothing is happening. Many kids have learned nothing in a year. That is why there should be a medical excuse for a child to be fully remote.

I have a neighbor that has all their kids remote, their choice, which they say they are have issues.
The mother works in a senior home and the father is out and about all day long.
I just don’t get it as you don’t want these kids in school, even though school has been proved not to spread the virus but they are more susceptible to bring it home.
