I don't think it matters. I am still going to wear a mask as it is my understanding that the vaccine may not be 100% effective
Agree, NO vaccine is 100% effective.
But does that mean masks will never go away? The flu shot is not 100% and you can get sick from someone else if they have it. No one is walking around with a mask on for that.
Probably because the flu isn't as deadly. The flu never killed almost 600,000 Americans in one year.
But the flu kills, just like every other virus kills. Covid numbers are added into other issues so only 6% die ONLY of covid. People who have cancer are many times put down as died from pneumonia. Is that number wrong too as they should be only cancer?
A year later and you're still stupidly comparing COVID to the flu??????? The flu doesn't kill over 600K people a season.
Also, please realize the significant number of people that have pre-existing conditions, many of which are undiagnosed, and which greatly increase the risk factor of COVID. Using your example, if someone had cancer, contracts COVID and subsequently dies they did NOT die from cancer, they died from complications of COVID. Maybe they would have lived another year even with their cancer but COVID complicated their condition. Another example, you can live a long, healthy life with diabetes however, contracting COVID can complicate that condition and possibly kill you. I know everyone thinks they are super healthy and invincible but anyone can have an underlying condition they are unaware of and that can complicate COVID, that's what makes it potentially more deadly.
ETA - Most people aren't dying ONLY of COVID. Most people have health issues that put them at a greater risk for mortality.
Exactly what I said and they stated only 6% die ONLY from Covid. Most people have preexisting conditions, overweight and diabetics get it worse many times. As well as smokers as they can’t breath as well.
False/misleading
Bipartisan fact check
Anyway, those same comorbidities exist for people when the flu circulates and it doesn't affect them the way covid does.
There may be parallels with the flu - i.e. it's something we will have to live with - but its sheer impact makes it a relatively inaccurate analogy.

I am not debating whether or not it is similar to the flu. Like the flu, it is a respiratory virus. Someone asked about the reasoning for masks and my answer was because it is more deadly than the flu, as well as more contagious. That is probably why people don't wear masks for the flu. As an aside, the flu is almost nonexistent this year. So masks do help with the flu as well.
In Asian countries they have worn masks for other illnesses so this nothing new.

Fully vaccinated people can gather without masks, CDC says
It also doesn't matter that only 6% died from just COVID. People with diabetes, heart conditions, obesity, asthma, etc would still be alive if they did not get COVID. No matter how you slice it, this is more deadly than the flu. Never have hospitals been overwhelmed and the dead have to be buried in potters field. Even among those with pre existing conditions who had the flu. I'm not understanding why this is so hard to grasp.

The flu or any other virus could easily affect people who have pre existing issues. Covid was unknown and people died because they were put on ventilators. They now know better ways of treating it and that is why the death rates have gone down. The majority of deaths are older people who have issues.

YOU are the one who asked why we don't wear masks for the flu. In America. I can't speak for Asia as I don't live there. In the country we live in, flu numbers are down considerably this year. We aren't discussing Asia.

Because they had no clue how to handle this. Now they know what to do and luckily the amount of deaths are lower. Unfortunately not none which we would all like.

Any death is horrible but we as a whole only are going by numbers and not circumstances and that is what the media wants you to do. People are locking themselves up who have more of a chance getting into a car accident and dying than from Covid.

I am still not even close to being eligible for a vaccine nor is my husband. I am amazed that whole extended families are already almost fully vaccinated. Is everyone essential workers/teachers etc? Or does everyone in the world have comorbidities? I feel like nobody I know is vaccinated other than my parents because they are over 75.
I find it hard to believe as well. Many locations are not requesting ID or proof and part of me thinks many people are going for the shot when they should not be. NO one except for my parents, aunt and uncle have gotten the shot, so I dont know how it is so many extended families and friends have gotten the shot

Same here sista, same here. The same goes for any other poster that has a different thinking.

I think comparing Covid to the flu is the most logical thing to do. For all of the viruses that we know of, covid and the flu do have a lot of similarities. Covid has clearly been more deadly than the flu (although way less deadly for young people) and it definitely seems to be much more contagious than the flu. However, I would think that part of the reason for both of those things is that this is something that is completely new and we have never been exposed to before. The flu is something that we have no cure for although now we have vaccines and treatments. We now have both for Covid as well. Just like the Flu, I don't think that we will be able to get rid of Covid completely since we are already seeing variants. Also, just like the flu, covid is worse for people with comorbidities but in general is fairly low risk without comorbidities. I am not sure why comparing Covid and the Flu is "stupid." Just like the flu, covid is most likely something that we will have to learn to live with and accept that it will be a risk that we are taking.
Agree with everything u said. I also don’t understand why it’s so hard to think there can be new strains emerging. The same happens with the flu each year.

Re: Fully vaccinated people can gather without masks, CDC says
You can compare any illness to any other illness and get similarities and differences. The important part is WHY you're doing it. What is your end game?
It makes a big difference whether you're trying to say "Well, better stock up on zinc in case I get flu or covid, 'cause it works on both!" OR "We never wore masks to prevent the flu, so I am going to walk around maskless in public now when we are being begged to continue certain practices a bit longer!" Or anything in betweem.
It helps if you explain explicitly WHY this comparison is so important to make.
Because maybe society should be more conscious of people walking around and going to work with raging flu. Maybe we should have been all along.
Or maybe we need to realize that with the potential for covid to evolve into something increasingly lethal and contagious, the end game of flouting CDC regs is not an admirable one--no matter how little we did to prevent flu before.

What locations are NOT asking for ID? StonyBrook makes you show it twice. I had to show my license, a letter from my school stating I work there, and my school ID.
Plus I had to show my confirmation email.

I wonder if the state run sites are better than the local ones.
JB wanted my DL and school ID.
That's how the stories seem to be adding up.
But it's just anecdotal.

I went to Javits. They checked my ID but they barely looked at the letter saying I had asthma - but I guess they looked at it enough because they sent me to the nurse since I take a steroid inhaler (and I hadn't disclosed that since I didn't think that's what they meant).

The difference may be that NYC only requires that you self-certify that you are eligible, while the NYS guidelines require Proof (doctors note, etc). LI sites are following NYS's guidelines.

The Javitis Center has been turning people away without a proof.
The State is actually more lenient and says you only need to self certify.

I went to aqueduct and they had multiple checkpoints for id and proof of eligibility. I'm sure there are some people gaming the system, but I don't think it's as prevalent as some might think.

Javits is a state site. I did have a letter since I didn't want to get denied, I just felt they didn't really look at it.

What locations are NOT asking for ID? StonyBrook makes you show it twice. I had to show my license, a letter from my school stating I work there, and my school ID.
I got both doses at Hillcrest High School in Queens. I had my driver's license, school ID, and a letter from my principal. Never asked for a thing.
Javits is a state site. I did have a letter since I didn't want to get denied, I just felt they didn't really look at it.
I just came back from getting my first shot at Stony Brook and they did not ask to see my doctor's letter. They checked my appointment sheet twice and my ID once. That was it. Nice and fast!

I also think people who are not eligible are getting it or maybe we aren’t clear on who is.
I just had a friend tell me that she can go get the vaccine just because her husband works in the hospital. He is not a dr or nurse either. He does some type of maintenance but basically he is not really around patience. I know he was eligible but didn’t realize family members I guess you live with are eligible also!

I didn't realize it either - and was looking for guidance as someone told me that. I think it just changed.
There are appointments available right now at the local state sites - they just released them this am.
ETA - but there isn't an option to say I live with someone that is public facing so I'm eligible and under 60. It still just has the same working options and co-morbidities.

Yeah I don't' think living with someone who is front line qualifies you. It's not listed at least.

I didn’t think so either. She said she can go to her DH hospital (it’s a Northwell one) and get it if she wants it. Who knows how accurate she has it she’s on the fence of getting it but she is swearing she can go and someone her DH works with wife went in and got it.

I don't doubt these hospitals will vaccinated family memebers of employees- even if they don't qualify yet- especially if they have extra doses. I heard that they need to be used by a certain time, or they are no longer effective, so rather than throw them out I wouldn't be surprised if they did this.
